This is the thread to post pictures of where you live; give a little taste of your part of the world.
I live in Roanoke, Virginia in the US of A. It's located in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains. 3 hours from Richmond, 3.5 hours from Charlotte, 4 hours from D.C., and 1 hour from Lynchburg - famous for Jerry Falwell and RMer Chloe.
Roanoke is the 10 largest city in Virginia at 94,000. County school Cave Springs was where JJ Reddick and the Barber twins went to school. The cost of living is low and the crime is mostly isolated. I live in a neighborhood called Crystal Springs in south Roanoke (SoRo to the hipsters). It's a nice neighborhood with big, beautiful old homes and streets lined with big, beautiful old trees. It is probably the nicest neighborhood in the city limits (most who can afford it move to the county for the better schools) and I live in a duplex in the outer regions. So I sort of live in the poor section of the rich neighborhood. Okay, onto the pictures. This is my duplex, I live on the right side. This is the top of my street looking down. That building in the background is the Wachovia tower. some of the imposing trees The problem with the trees are that they hang right over the power lines and we get a lot of wind here, which means a lot of power outages. Just recently this tree came down. That hill in the back is where my landlord live, the view is beautiful up there. The mountain in the back there is Mill Mountain. You can't see it from here, but on the top is a 70 ft tall star that overlooks downtown. This is Crystal Springs Elementary. It really is nestled right in the neighborhood with home on all sides. You just travel down block after block and there it is. I sometimes shoot hoops at the basketball court. One afternoon, I had my highest self-esteem followed by quick humbling experience in one day ever. I was playing 21 with some dudes and I easily won every game. They guys were in their mid to late 30s and in good shape, but they just weren't good ballers. One of them asked if I played for the Roanoke Dazzle (local CBA or ABA team even though it sounds like WNBA) and I was like "no, I didn't even make my high school team." After they left this tall drink of water shows up and wants to play one on one. We played to 11 and I lost 11-0. The dude said he was 6'9'' and it's amazing how much of a difference 3 inches makes when you're as slow as me. In between each block the have this small alley for people to leave their trash bins. It still amazes me the garbage trucks and fit down here. This is the heart of Crystal Springs on, appropriately, Crystal Springs Ave. That's Mill Mountain again in the back. local fire station This is my favorite place to go for pizza or beer. It's called Fork in the Alley and if you're not looking for it, you'll go right by it. They make brick oven pizza and it's the best in Roanoke. Plus they have Dogfish Head on tap. The outdoor seating is perfect in the summer. Not too far from me is a bridge over 581 and now that I finally have a tripod, I can finally do this shot. That light in the sky is a plane.

I'm kind of planning it at the moment, making a list of local points of interest etc, I'll hopefully be able to get around to start shooting on Sunday, depends on how the beer festival goes on Saturday evening/night!

Becaue I have lived within 1 hour of my birthplace for the last 32 years. Everything to do around here has been done. You can only go to Cape Cod or Six Flags so many times. My friends from highschool have all fallen off as we get older. I would rather spit on most of my coworkes than see them outside of work. I know the economy is no better anywhere else, but I'm spent watching everyone I know lose their job. It's pathetic. I just need something....else. I am in a rut in my life. I am happy to have a job, but I am not challanged, spend 90% of my day posting here, watching hulu, and browing flickR for pictures to print out a pretend are mine as I hang them on my cork board. I have a happy marriage, and a great son. - Pretty much the best thing I've ever had going for me. My wife is ready to get out of here too. Besides all that I hate winter, and the cold, and I HATE this shithole state I work in (RI) It's like a giant landfill.
I will miss some things about living around here
Cape Cod Fenway Park Mt. Graylock autum leaves Cony Island Hot Dogs Boston Pearl Jam shows
Arizona was very nice when we visited. Nothing specific is bringing us there...It's just not here.

I hear ya, I couldn't wait to get the hell out of there myself. But it took being away for a few years to miss the unique beauty and culture of New England. I don't regret moving, but this place just isn't for me. I would move back if my wife would go but we'll probably end up PA. Anyway, thanks for posting. I really like the misty pond.

Nice pictures dscans. Very rural and cosy, with beautiful colours. It also looks extremely clean, like it was painted, instead of photographed. The house you live in is cool.

Nice pics! Do we need to post pics that we've taken ourselves? Because if so I need to do that.
It would be nice. But if you can find someone else's pictures that tell the story of your neighborhood/city then I guess that would be alright. Whatever you feel like doing.
Thanks Anders, feel free to post some pics as well.

I live in Saint John, NB, Canada (not to be confused with St. John's, Newfoundland...i live about an hour from the Maine border. There are no real big cities around here, though I live in one of the most populous areas of the province with about 150,000 people in the greater Saint John area. It's an economically depressed part of the country and has been for decades, but things are booming a bit right now and we seem to be in a bit of a bubble compared to the rest of the world.
Despite economic woes and crumbling infrastructure, nature smiles upon us as I feel I live in one of the most picturesque places in the country. The ocean is out my front door and one of the most beautiful river systems in the world is out my back door. Trees abound.
The St John river as seen from a friend cottage.
A walking trail a few minutes from my house. It follows the ocean and varies from dense old growth forest to sandy beach.
Another view of the St John river, about an hour from my house. The river system is a major destination for sailing enthusiasts because it's relatively untouched and nowhere near as crowded as other river systems on the Eastern seabord. And it looks like a postcard all the time.
It's also a very bleak and depressing (yet still beautiful) place in the winter.
Fog is as common here as it is in Seattle or London...probably more so. The fog effect in this picture hasn't been enhanced, it really is like that a LOT of the time. Driving at night sometimes can be like driving in a whiteout snowstorm.
Despite the abundance of nature, Saint John itself is very industrialized. We have the largest refinery in eastern Canada and another one is being built beside it. We have paper mills and all kinds of other crap. Anyone visiting will tell you that it stinks here. They are probably right.
This is a view of Partridge Island, a quarantine station much like Ellis Island was to New York. Thousands of Irish immigrants died out there. The concrete structure in the foreground is a mounted gun placement from WWII. This is a stones throw from my house, and it's what i see out my window every day.
Me, watching some waves after a fall storm.
A view of the Little Salmon river along the Fundy coast. This trail encompasses 45 kms of untouched coastal wilderness...the only stretch of it's kind on the east coast. It's a gruelling backcountry hike with dozens of steep ravines.
My family camp in St George, NB. The nearest neighbor is at least a mile away.

I really like the fog one! The way the fog blends in and then the contrast between the vivid colours and details in the front, and the bland colours in the back because of the fog. Yup.

I had the assignment to shoot a landscape in my photo class, 2 nature landscapes and 2 city landscapes. I thought i'd post them here since these are pics from where I live. Only the city I don't really live in currently, but I used to, if that counts. And they're in b&w because they have to, but I like b&w so.
