You can also get away with having super rudimentary melodies if you're a great lyricist (see The Mountain Goats).

Work on your xylophone skills!

We should debate the various approaches to 'voice' and 'tone', Mickey. I'm struggling.

SRSLY.

Did you get my message? What do you think about voice and tone?

I did, thanks. I've been a bit busy to reply to it at length, but I will. I was pretty much going 'yep', 'yep', 'yep' throughout.

Anyway, voice, tone. Hmmm... One of the hardest things to decide on when writing a poem. I'm really having a big headache over a poem I'm trying to write where it needs such a gentle, soft approach... and I have a perfect metaphor, but one which I have no confidence in (it just seems trite and cheesy, even if I know it's the right one). It's the language that will make it something worth reading, I'm just not sure I'm up to the job.

This lack of confidence has immediately followed this publication stuff... I think I may just do a Philip Larkin and go to the editor and say 'Thanks for everything, but after these, there are no poems left. My career is over.' ;)
