It feels good to be back in the poetry game team.

'Like.'

I got a rejection letter two days ago, and now I'm waiting for a second one.

I'm really starting to hate fiction, mostly the fact that I'm bad at it.

It's time to face the fact that I want to be a better writer than I am. Fiction, drama, poetry, it's all shite. There are too many people that I read and think, "what the fuck am I doing? I mean, what's even the point?"

But somehow.... it keeps pouring out. Liquid shit from a fountain pen.

Fiction hardly ever floats my boat, reading-wise. As for writing it, I have no idea what good prose even IS. My novel has gone through about eight different plots and four different narration styles/ tones, and I give up because I can't make those decisions which mean that I actually finish the bloody thing. I still have no idea what it wants to be, after several years. Yeah, fiction sucks. At least in poetry you have structural and stylistic boundaries (either inherited ones or invented). With prose, you're constantly in the dark.

I think I'm starting to realize what good fiction is, but that doesn't tell me fuck all about how to write it.

Two problems for me:

1) I don't really give a fig about plot, which means I've all but abandoned narrative poetry. Lyrical stuff is where it's at. This doesn't bode well where writing fiction is concerned.

2) Related to point one. I get far too hung up on language - making every sentence absolutely beautiful - to ever be happy enough with an entire novel. If every single fucking word counts (as it does in poetry), I could be claiming my pension before my first novel is published.

Just finished my second short in two days. They're both rough. But it feels good to be working. Bring on the rewrites!

Amen. I just finished a new draft of my story for my fiction workshop. Feels good to be done (and to see marked improvement from the previous draft).

:nice:

It's always nice to see improvement. Nothing is worse than unintentional steps back.
