Wrote another short play this morning before work. I hope Bret Palmer likes it.

You should NEVER have to pay to have your work published: to do so is called Vanity publishing. It strokes your ego for five minutes, but ultimately it's designed to make far more money for the 'publisher.' These publishers aren't interested in your work.

I'd say the same about critique. I've never paid to have my work looked at, and never would; it says 'money-making scheme' to me.

Who is the one critiquing? What reason have you got to trust their opinion? What makes you think their advice would make your work better? Is it because they're charging you money? Well, anyone can do that. I don't need credentials.

Be careful.

Oh, and lastly, there are plenty of writers' forums which are absolutely free to join, like this one is. Look for them.

I agree on all counts, the reason I edited the 'author' of the quote.

I was actually searching for writers forums and happened upon that, considering it was a thought that lived and died in less than a second. The ones critiquing seem to be those who pay, probably until they get their points to submit and stop.

I ran into my old creative writing prof at a coffee shop the other day and realized that I don't write shit outside of the classroom. I really can't swing going back to school now but a forum might be worth the effort.

Yeah. But then you've got to wonder how good the critique's gonna be, if that's the extent of their motivation.

Not a mystery, I'd guess it'd be shit.

Exception to Harmless' rule would be real writers conferences, like Suwanee or BreadLoaf. You're essentially paying for short classes with world-class writers. Not dissimilar to writing programs in general.

Absolutely: workshops, conferences, courses, day courses, online courses. All good. I've just done an online course, actually.

Was the course through a school you are currently enrolled in other physical classes or no?

Na. It was an online course run by The Poetry School, based in London. A poetry course, obviously, so not helpful if fiction's your bag. The only writing study I've done is a lot of online forum workshopping, and an MA in Creative Writing a few years ago. All paid for except the online workshopping, for which I've always used one poetry forum. It's not for everyone, to say the least.

You guys have any opinions on what it is to be a writer/artist today? Feels like this young generation is lacking a voice, or it doesn't ahve the desire to be heard, at least.

And they all really dug my scarf. But they were curious why I didn't have my laptop with me. Like, you can't be a writer unless everyone sees you writing in public, ya know?

Stripes. Blue and grey. Subtle. Classy. Understated.
