Just write out random conversations between different characters as a writing exercise. I'm skeptical of my dialogue talents and trying this out tonight.

Devin -I don’t mean to load us up some pretentious shit but we barely even talk to each other anymore kaitlin. How am I even supposed to know where to begin on asking you where your day was.

Kaitlin-How about you just ask

Devin- I mean shit

Kaitlin-Listen Devin let’s pretend that all of your individual discrepancies weren’t between us and that we could actually understand for a moment the value we have as a couple. You know with out these harrowing views of your own reality and the moments you channel them into perceiving mine. Maybe if you could see us as an entity. If you could fantasize about something simple like a nice day at the beach.

Devin- I have fantasised about that but I just cannot these days. I’m torn between my reality. I’m disillusioned.

characters are fictional

why you want to talk like characters in them? or you want to be able to take from great movies and improve upon them by combining them with more great movies?

No I just wanna write good dialogue. Even when I'm writing short stories they are always narrative driven. I wanna be able to pretend I'm 2 different people sitting at a table and have like a fascinating conversation. I tend to shoot from my own hip when I do this though. Tarintino is just notorious for being wicked at dialogue; why i mentioned him.

i'd say read more scripts... his dialogue is generally loose non-sequiter dialogue.

check out the movie "his girl friday" its from 1940, but has great dialogue. it might be inspiring.

also when people do things well, don't get jealous, try and achieve that. because it something that is achievable, best think of yourself as someone who can do it.

Look I know Devin's a total joke but really, just because it's fictional doesn't mean sounding like a high schooler who read a Sartre play makes for good dialogue.

Some information that the reader might need in order to better interpret the story:

1. Bernard was the name of my recently deceased betta fish. He died shortly before Christmas due to what I believe were natural causes.
2. A new betta fish has since been purchased, and I've given him the name "Bernard II".

The following is a fictional account that takes place within the same universe as that which the reader finds themselves in at this very moment:

Bernard II: A crossword puzzle? I love crossword puzzles.

Bernard: Me too, I used to do them a lot when I was lifeguarding. On four-hour shifts, puzzles really passed the time. I got better and better over the summer too, I'm proud to say.

Bernard II: Are you just doing one of those novelty books that you buy at gas stations or a NYT collection? Those puzzles in the Times are pretty difficult, but once you get the hang of it you'll work up to like a Wednesday or a Thursday. I can do a Friday now, so if you need any help let me know.

Bernard: Well, thanks, but I like to do them on my own. Set personal goals...that kind of thing.

Bernard II: I could be of valuable assistance to you.

Bernard: Thanks, but no thanks. Enjoy your life there on earth. I may or may not see you soon.

Local: Wal Mart; Sporting goods section

Devin - "that's the xerces species isn't it?"

Chad - "the largest dinosaur alive. While we're here we should stalk up on food too and are you sure you have the right clothing? Back door camping is about more than the knife you carry honestly.

Devin- "the xerces is a particularly good knife, I used to work in a walmart."

Chad - "yeah

Devin - "It was probably the most dignified job I ever had, honestly, we just fucked around the whole time with the other kids and as long as I did my short list of tasks I was fine. We honestly fucked around so much, I-"

Chad - Hey uh, did ur mom say she needed kleenex?

Devin - Anyway this one time we built a fort in the warehouse. We went and sat down back there and passed a ball between us. Ha there was this guy named Derek too and we had this game we'd play. We had a pink can of beans and you had to hide it in the main halls or by the cash registers. The trick was to hide it by the cashiers and check outs and then the other guy would have to think of an excuse to go over there if he wanted to look for it. Whoever could find it quicker would win.

I really felt like I was there, Dev. I can just imagine myself browsing some bait and tackle and eavesdropping.
