Post subject: Non-Americans adopting an American Accent

Why, oh why do people who have never even BEEN to the states adopt an American drawl? I have a guy who sits opposite me in work who suffers from this affliction and apparently put on the accent a few years ago.

The NI accent generally speaking isnt that far away from an american accent though? Your ears would hear the difference but it really isnt that much of a leap.
Though Ive always loved the way vowel sounds get bent into strange shapes up north:)

...really? I would have imagined our accent was really different!
See, I generally don't like our accent. Southern Irish, though, is very melodic. Ours can be nasal and grating.
