First off, I don't have any shame in taking advantage now and then of the wonderful welfare programs that this country offers and I don't wanna hear any "Hey! My tax dollars pay for your dinner!" cuz MINE are paying for it too. That's part of the reason we PAY taxes is so that we're able to get help when we need it. EVERYONE goes through hard times and I'm glad there's something for us to fall back on when/if we need it. That being said, WE GOT FOOD STAMPS TODAY!
As you know, (or maybe don't) I resigned my teaching position for health and personal reasons. I couldn't have done it at a worse time. Billy was told two Fridays before that he'd start working on the new project the following week in Enid and until then, they didn't have any "busy work" for him for that week because of the budget. I was okay with resigning then because I knew I'd be getting a big fat check with all my summer pay on it. Well, apparently the new project in Enid got knocked back a couple more weeks due to the weather and such and he won't get to start on this job for another 2 weeks. Also, my Big Fat Check has to be saved back for electric/phone/house payment now. I was sick of eating canned peaches and oatmeal for dinner, so we applied for food stamps. We thought "Oh, we'll be able to get $50, maybe $75 to help us out." ...We got $275! Woo hoo! So along with regular food for this month, we stocked up on a bunch of canned stuff (NOT PEACHES!) and other "non-perishables" for if we ever need it again, ya know? And NO, we're not gonna try to stay on them for 5 years or anything. Just a month or two until we're back on our feet.
