so, on wednesday night, i went to wal-mart and bought some fish. by friday, both were dead.
today, i went to a pet store and bought two goldfish. the guy assured me that they'd be very easy to take care of that i really couldn't kill them. i came home, put them in their bowl, put a little food in and went grocery shopping.
two hours later, i came back home. both fish are dead and have sunk to the bottom of the fish tank. what the hell am i doing to these poor fish? is there some secret to keeping a fishbowl that i just don't know about? what should i do to ensure that the next time i buy fish i don't kill them?

it could be the tap water
if you are using tap water then they make additives to make it safe for the fish, but you could use distilled water, its like 50cents a gallon at wall mart and its ok for the fish

The fish need air.
i understand this. my sister has two beta fish in these sort of bowls and she's had them for a while. she doesn't have a air pump or anything for them.
i'm either buying really bad fish, or i'm really bad at taking care of them, or all the water that i've stuck in the tank is poisonous, which kind of makes me not want to drink it or bathe in it. /:

What state do you live in? If it is in the north, chances are your water is as acidic as hell. Get an actual tank man... Fish bowls are for cartoons. Read a book on the matter first, if you actually care about having some cool fish, it takes some work.

Yeah, but betas are tanks, they'll live through anything. They can survive in pretty much any water, and they can even breath air if it comes down to it. I've had one for three years and its still going strong.

Ditto on the distilled water.
After you get the fish, fill up the tank, do you let the fish aclimate in their bag from the fish store inside of your tank? If you dump the fish right from the store into your tank/bowl it'll shock their system too much due to difference in water temperature.

My friend bought a fish once and kept it in the tank at my house. It was alive for a long time but after a while he was belly up for quite some time. We took him into the toilet and as he prepared to flush, the fish turned over and starting swimming. My friend panicked and flushed the toilet.
