originally, "down to earth" was used to convey a reality check, if you will. an early example of this usage comes from the 1920's: "I had for some little time been living . . . in another world. I now came down to earth with a bang." (Very Good, Jeeves!)
over time, the phrase took on the meaning of being grounded. early occurances of this can be seen in the 1930's, when actresses were refrerred to as being "down-to-earth" and "not concerned with the glamours of hollywood."
