My roomate and I are thinking about throwing one of these, everybody has to dress up, martinis and other fancy drinks are served, plus cheeses and meats and other little food things.

You can get one of those frozen shrimp cocktail platters. They aren't the highest quality or price, but they taste pretty good. I'd say crackers and cheese with high quality liquor would suffice, though. Just toss in some of the usual snacks like pretzels, chips, nuts, etc. No matter how "classy" a party, everyone just wants something to munch on.

spike is right - charing a cover at a cocktail party is tacky
and footingthe cost of all the booze needed for martinit and fancy drinks can get pricey, plus, the party could get ugly quick because martini's get you fucked up quick.
you know what they say about martinis, don't you?
martinis are like tits - one is not enough and three is too many.

the only thing more tacky than charging at your own cocktail party is getting hammered as well.....its not a kegger....foot the bill for the whole thing...

i've never been to a party that charged a fee. thats not even an option. just stock up on wine and enough booze for the regular cocktails- you don't REALLY need anything fancy. have the thing catered too- that'll take a lot off your plate.
