When you disagree in real life, do you kind of snarkily chortle after you say, "I disagree"? Do you laugh lightly and shrug as you say it? Do you emphasize the "I" or the "disagree"? Do you smile when you say it? Do you say it slowly, drawing out the syllables for maximum emphasis?

Do you say it hurriedly? Do you say it loudly? Do you say it with a New England accent? With a Southern accent? With a non-regional accent? Do you say it to your family? To your friends? To your co-workers? To your lovers?

Do you say it in a house? Do you say it to a mouse? Do you say it in a tree? Would you say it... to me?

All his life, he refused help. He would beat us if we asked if he needed help with anything. He always would tell us to pick ourselves up by our bootstraps. Often, he illustrated the importance of this by whipping us with his bootstraps. I remember one time when he came home with soot on his hands and face, his axe covered in ash. He sat down at his typewriter eating some some brisket and drinking a cup of mulled wine, and we wept because we were so sorry for him. He was a weak man on the inside, but we couldn't blame him.

I remember him fondly, even now. In spite of his tyranny, I admire his courage to etch a place in this world and not let a physical deformity stand in his way. I hope this is what you have done. That is the American spirit; to never let adversity stand in your way.
