i just found a course for $475. these things are no joke, though:

Basic Sailing consists of three 3 hour classroom sessions and and two 6 hour sailing sessions. The goal of this extensive 21 hour course is to provide a firm foundation of sailing skills and knowledge which will enable the student to confidently sail a 24' to 30' keelboat in moderate wind and sea conditions. Basic Sailing is taught aboard J/24 sloops with a maximum of 4 students per boat. If requested A.S.A. Basic Keelboat Certification is awarded upon successful completion of the written and practical exams.

I think a better name for this thread would be "The water is so rad"
But seriously, I went deep sea fishing off the coast of Gloucester, MA once and it was one of the best times of my life. I used to canoe down the Connecticut River once in a while, I miss it. I wish I could sail.
Good luck.

i've been meaning to get over there.

in regards to sailing ... i've been told new york city is among the best possible venues to learn at considering how busy the harbor is. if you can handle this place you can handle 'em all.

Sailing is great. I took my certification a couple years ago on a course where we lived on the boat for a week while doing it, great way to go.

It's one of my goals in life to buy a boat, retire and spend at least half of the year sailing around on it. My folks have done just that and I was just in Panama visiting them on their boat. :luv:

One of these years, I'd like to go parasailing. Could be a blast.
