So I live in an apartment that is basically an old house that's been partitioned, with another house in back. It's dingy and almost tenement-like but the rent is really cheap, all bill are paid, I have no lease, no deposit, and the landlord is this old Vietnam vet that's really friendly, drinks good beer, and doesn't care if the rent is late. Perfect for weirdos and young folks in transition like me.
They had been doing renovation for a while on the back house, but I figured they were just renovations. I come home from vacation to find out that the daughter of the old lady who owns the apartments has moved from New Jersey to be the new manager of the place, and she's ruining everything. She wants to jack the rent up about 30%, wants to charge for parking, wants the landlord to start paying rent, and she wants us to start paying with mailed checks (we normally just pay in cash and get written receipts). She basically wants to make the place like all the shitty overpriced apartment complexes around campus and move in wealthier students instead of the grab bag of people that live here right now. She's gotten into several arguments with the landlord and he's told her to go fuck herself and is moving out.
So basically, it looks like a may need a new place to live soon. Fuck this chick.

This same thing happened to a good friend of mine. It seems like places like yours are getting harder and harder to find in college towns. I hope everything works out Nate.

Also, major irony: 1) her name is Felicity 2) she was in a NYT story where she was quoted saying this: ''I'm taking a class on truth and values in American society. My teacher brings up a lot about Donald Trump and the values he represents. It's important for a society to have values beyond material ones. Something durable. Something lasting. Material isn't lasting. For a lot of young people, Donald Trump is something they want to become.''
Great job, you miserable carpetbagger.

Yeah but if you'd signed a lease you wouldn't have to worry about shady managers jacking up your rent.
True. I don't even know if ours is going up, it may just be for the empty back house. But we didn't even know if we'd be living there for more than a month or two when we moved in.

Really the worst thing about it is the landlord moving out. He gives me a beer every time I go over there and he loves our dog. Plus he has the thickest Texas accent I've ever heard, it's hilarious.
