I referenced this in another thread, but I recently got a job with AmeriCorps mentoring and tutoring at-risk kids in a mostly minority area of Austin. The pay is shit, but I'll be actually making a difference and getting great teaching experience, something I'm very interested in. I'm so happy that I decided to do this instead of something just for a paycheck.

like i said in the thread you're referring to, that's really awesome.
I'm excited man. The people at the school said they're really glad they finally have a guy mentor to talk to some of the "angry young men" and be a role model for them. If I was still at school I'd probably be learning some useless crap; now I actually get to help others. Plus, with this experience I may be able to do that teaching gig in Japan.

My second piece of advice, have as many kids as you can, 'cuz that makes it more likely that one of those kids'll grow up an make it big in Hollywood. Then who's payin' the bills huh? Hollywood Kid.
That is really cool. I hope you'll get the chance to make a difference - I'm sure the fact that you took on the job alone is a really good start - and that you make your way through the phase where nothing might change and you feel like everyone's against you and so on. I can imagine that the burn out factor is pretty high and that there will be some huge knock-backs. So I wish you a lot of strength and inspiration. Oh and don't forget to have fun with your job.

I think this is the first time I've ever seen Raz be sincere in GD.

So this absolutely rules. I don't have to work with any ingrate white kids (60% hispanic, 40% black) everyone in my "office" (portable) is cool as shit, I get shout outs from little kids all day long, I got to ride a school bus and make elephant noises like I was in 2nd grade today, I talked to a ten-year old about Caesar Chavez and jazz, I helped kids get clothes, shoes, and eye exams, and today I threw forty yard spirals to a little girl for a half hour--and that was my work.
Thank you, baby Jesus.
