If you have an old internal hardrive from a machine you no longer use you can easily turn it into an external drive by buying a $20 case for it.

however, i have two hard drives in one computer...so i can take that out and carry it with me then?

Well, if the guy partitioned it you probably only have 1 physical hard drive inside your computer, but the computer cut it in half and is calling it two drives. If you still have the old computer you can remove the internal harddrive from their, place it in an external case (can be bought at any computer supply store), and then you can use that as a usb external drive. That';s what I did.

If you format the old hard drive before you take it out and use it as an external it shouldnt be a problem. Formatting it will erase everything and you'll be starting fresh. I had a lot of viruses on my old one and now I use the old drive to back up my music and stuff and I havent had any problems plugging it into new machines.

So I have a question about this then. I had an old POS emachine that had the motherboard go up in the summer. I am looking at picking up a cheapy desktop with no OS for less then $200, I have all of the external components I need, and before I tossed the old desktop, I took out the hard drive. When I get this new desktop, can't I just put the old hard drive in the new desktop?

i think it depends on the type of hard drive it is... SATA or something or other and whether the new motherboard accepts that kind...i think

You need to have the proper slots on the motherboard for your particular hard drive. yes. And more than likely a new motherboard will have SATA slots (Serial ATA), I think.
