My 7 year-old son wants an "ipod" for xmas. Are the off brand mp3 players ok? like Sandisk, etc.?

there's a few of the Samsung Sansa players on sale right now at Best Buy and Circuit City - those are pretty decent from what I know

Any of the small Sandisk players are nice - I got my mom one of the 1gb last year and she uses it all the time for the gym with no problems whatsoever

You might be able to get away w/ a mobiBLU cube. I have one and it works great (I only use my mp3 player in the summer when i read by the pool, so I don't need a huge expensive i pod). It's not an i-pod, but it's damn cool looking, so that might make up for it. It also has an am/fm tuner.

YES! It's one inch by one inch. I have the first gen (No color screen, just blue on black) and everyone always raves over it.

I'm pretty sure they're only about $100-$150 too, for either a 1 gig or 2 gig. I can't imagine a 7 year old needing more space than that.

It plays straight mp3's, too, you don't have to worry about weird formats like the ipod, just plug it in and copy over what you want.
