I have a question about eggs (no Ed-centric pun intended) you guys have in the US.

The wife and I watch a lot of cooking shows and have both noted how bright white your eggs seem to be (it seems to be limited to US-made cooking shows) and they just look quite surreal. It's something I've noticed in movies/TV shows etc. as well whenever you see eggs.

Here's an example of what I mean:

The only eggs I've ever seen in my life over here are different shades of brown, from quite light brown to quite dark so I've always been perplexed by these bizarre white eggs. Is it just a TV fallacy or are the eggs you get from the supermarket really that white?

All the supermarket eggs here, even cheap battery hen eggs, always look kinda like this:

What's the reason, I wonder? Are the eggs in the US bleached in some way prior to sale? Or are the white eggs produced by different breeds of chicken or something?...It really boggles my mind...

basically the white eggs come from a different type of chicken than the brown eggs. In upstate New York, where I grew up, I seem to remember the eggs were always white. In Massachusetts, while they have white eggs, mostly you see brown eggs. There's a little jingle they used to play on commercials for brown eggs around Boston that I still hear once in awhile that goes "Brown eggs are local eggs, and local eggs are fresh!"

You CAN get some brown eggs around here, but they're more expensive. The only eggs we ever get are always the bright white kind. :)

the vast majority of eggs sold in supermarkets around the USA come from the white leghorn hen and they are bright white. There's no difference in taste between commercially produced brown and white eggs. Some people claim that they can tell a difference between a free range hen and a commercial hen. I've never done a taste test.

This is what I was going to say, I just get white eggs around here just because I was raised on white eggs, but I don't have a problem with the brown eggs.

I’m the same way, but instead of “eggs” insert the word “people”

"eggs" and "people" are really just interchangeable.

It's the same thing I say about people, we're all gooey, dead, yellow embryos on the inside.

Man, we're totally fucked down here then...been eating them for 25 years and counting...

But in all seriousness, this has been an enlightening thread. I now know it's the different chickens that cause the existence of these crazy white eggs; at least they're not bleached like that or anything gross.

Come to Australia where we have mind-melding brown eggs for all!
