I'm thinking about getting a new pair of headphones, really good ones. Preferably the earbud type... can you get those with a kind of adaptation so i can plug into my discman and my record player? Because the plugs are different sizes. Anyone have any reccomendations?
edit: or should i just bite the bullet and get an mp3 player to save myself having to carry a heap of cds with me when i go backpacking next year...

yes, you should be able to get something to attach to the headphone cord so that you can plug it into your record player.
and yes, you should get a mp3 player. the fact that they are so small is a huge advantage. that and the fact that you don't have to carry around a shitload of cds.
They cut out all other noise pretty dramatically (which can be scary when walking in the city), but are great for planes, etc. The behind-the-neck style left/right split is a bit annoying, but otherwise I'm quite happy with them.
I'm sure you can get a 1/4" adaptor for them at any radio shack.
And as for the mp3 player question - I have yet to hear anyone who has bought an iPod or something comparable say "Damn, I wish I could still lug my diskman and 40 CD's instead of listening to this thing." Do yourself a favor and make the investment.

Okay, so how about some really nice, full headphones? My Sony MDR-V250's are just about worn out. I'm looking for the kind that envelop your ear, are extremely comfy and give you a full listening experience.

I've found the reviews on CNET.com quite useful to get an understanding of how good different headphones are

You just wait til I get mine. I despise earbud headphones unless i'm running or biking, in which case they're a necessary evil.
I hate them too because they are never comfortable in my ear, but as of right now, neither are these:
Haha, i have that exact pair sitting in front of me at work. They aren't bad for $30 headphones. Their main problem is that the earpieces aren't big enough to cover the whole ear so it is a bit uncomfortable for long periods and you get excess background noise.

The pad things push on the edges of my ear and makes them hurt if I wear them for longer than 10 minutes. It blows, and I think I'm willing to finally blow some cash on a good pair. These things are so fucking beat up from wear and tear (I think they're 5-6 years old) that it's about time.
Grados for rock. SR 60 good entry level, SR 80's are a little bassier but u pay more for it. Bring a few cds or your portable and go audition a pair. Their input indepence is relatively low so you don't need a huge amount of current to drive them, thus they are excellent for portable players. You won't regret it. I personally own a pair of SR80's and ive been at it for almost a year.

i just bought a pair saturday, you're right about the outside noise being eliminated. so far i loved them, i cant believe i paid $50 for a pair of earbuds but i cant complain
