The whole Christian Bale thing this week has me thinking.

I'm pretty forgiving of people who are mostly good dudes who occasionally have a temper explosion, and who feel remorse for it afterward. Maybe it's because I'm like that and I can relate, but I can understand how some people might find such temper explosions, and the things said or done during those outbursts, to be unacceptable and unforgivable. I can also see why people would find behavior like this to be scary and dangerous.

On the other end of the spectrum, there are people who are kind of pricks all the time. Just a little bit, but it's consistent. They don't try to disguise who they are or how they feel, so in many ways, they are more "real" and honest about their feelings. But these type of people really get under my skin, and I generally can't stand to be around them long. For all their honesty and frequent entertainment value, I find their inability (or unwillingness) to be polite and to behave according to the expectations of others to be either uncivilized or just plain selfish. Of course, I can understand why many people would find a person like this refreshing in a world of people putting on masks and airs.


So which do you prefer, or more accurately, which are you more tolerant of?

(Of course, there are people who are even-tempered and polite all the time, and those who are consistently giant dickheads always having tantrums. These are not who I'm talking about. This is about the vast majority in the middle who generally try to be good, but sometimes miss the mark.)

Definitely a bigger fan of the first guy.

I'd rather an explosive temper and remorseful apologies from a basically decent person if forced to choose between that and someone who just acts like a prick all the time.

there's a downside to the explosive personality though- they run the risk not being thought sincere in the apology after awhile because it's pretty easy to blow up at people when you know all you have to do is say 'sorry' in a convincing manner afterwards and all is forgiven.

I just know that I find people who explode periodically pathetic, the other group is harder to define, and if it's one or the other I'm the one that's probably consistently a prick.

people who seem to be a prick all the time seem to either be making up for something they lack or hiding it.

i do find it pretty dangerous though, moreso than prickishness, but people with bad tempers at times but most of the time are even tempered are much more civil. and i agree with pd, a lot of times prickishness becomes a lack of general courtesy, which does bother me.

Sometimes I just wish more people would laugh things off, rather than throw things or break things or yell at people.

I think everyone has been a dickhead at one time or another in their life. And I think everyone is capable of exploding even if they are normally quite calm.

Everyone has a breaking point.

People that are habitually prickish or explosive though, are scary to be around. Mostly because their volatility can end up to be dangerous if gone unchecked.
