The eighties was the worst decade ever for music. I made a thread on time, oh yeah.
For popular music, there's no way it was any worse than the current decade, but for underground / alternative music it was one of the best. The Replacements, R.E.M., Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., +many many more.

This all the way. Every genre of rock had such a great underground scene in the 80s. Metal had the big 4 of thrash all at their best, Alternative had those ones along with The Cure, The Smiths, and Jane's Addiction. Industrial was starting with KMFDM, Ministry, and early NIN by the end of the 80s. Even punk had The Misfits and Black Flag at the start. And rap had NWA and Public Enemy.
Face it, the 80s were awesome, it's just the mainstream was as bad as today, only the underground was 10 times what it is today.

In the 80s
I never did like the Cure or the Smiths. Depeche Mode, yeah. But I never hear anybody ever mention another group within that same genre:
