I'm 27 and single. I am not the type of guy to pick up a girl in a bar, not because I'm shy - but because I tend to like to know more about someone other than their looks (though I'm as superficial as the next guy). Here is my question:

I don't know how I can date someone, even if it's just fooling around for a few weeks/months that isn't passionate about music. I'm ok if they aren't a big Pearl Jam fan and I'm ok if they don't even listen to Pearl Jam - in fact I've never dated a girl that's like Pearl Jam. But can anyone here date someone who doesn't like music? I listen to this band and I can't for the life of me figure out why the world doesn't hear what I hear. I guess it's like religion to most people. I'm not religious and pretty much detest it - I can't date someone who is religious either. But for someone to not connect to music, to me, is a major fault in personality. They must be wired wrong.

Thoughts?

Well if music is that important to you don't do it.

I wouldn't let something as small as music preference ultimately judge whether I would go out with someone, but everyone's got their own way. So if it's important to you than just go with it.

I didn't even know people outside this forum still liked Pearl Jam

Anyway, most people date in their social spectrum. So they probably have similar music tastes as you anyway, even if not exactly similar.

If she has big tits and sucks a good cock you should go for it. You can talk music with you buddies.

It's just that it's more than liking the same movies or food. I just don't understand how people can't be drawn to music. I guess it's more of a generic question. Why do so many people not "get it"? I don't think I'm being elitist.

Some chicks don't dig music as much as others. No reason to stay away. Like I said you talk music with you buddies.

But when you are lying in bed with someone...there is nothing better than listening to music. It takes it to another level if the other person is as passionate as you are about it.

Look, I'm also passionate about comedy (sounds generic but it goes way beyond 'i like to laugh') and current events/the world. Both of those are usually deal breakers too....the trio of deal breakers. I feel like I could get over the latter two if she was passionate about music. Unfortunately I have gone through many many dates and rarely find a girl that fits even ONE of the three things. If you don't find Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Daily Show, Family Guy, Meet the Parents, Office Space, Chris Rock, Eddie Murphy - etc. funny...you do not have a sense of humor. If you don't read a newspaper once a week or can't pick out the middle east on a map - you live a sheltered life. And if you don't like music, I think you are passionless.

I have a friend who has no desire to listen to music whatsoever, I think he has no soul.

No, not fair. I'm looking for a relationship. I don't care if it lasts 2 months or 2 years or 20 years. I am in no rush to get married. I just want something deeper than getting off in a body - I can do that myself.

I guess this is what I'm getting at. I truly believe that there is something wrong with someone who doesnt like music, who doesnt have one band or one genre that really effects them. It can even be something without lyrics - maybe they are die hard jazz fans. I know people who don't like music (and I use this very liberally...clearly everyone listens to SOME music - at a club, on the radio etc....thats not liking music).

People just have different tastes. That doesn't make them any less intelligent, witty, or passionate. You worry too much about this stuff. If the person is nice, kind, and sexy you really shouldn't worry about the television programs they watch.

Compatibility is important. I'm not excluding someone if they don't like a television show. But if their sense of humor is completely off base with mine...(which is a very good sense of humor if I may say so myself)...maybe thats not what I should be spending my days and nights with? If this person also doesnt care about the world we live in - that's something I should overlook because they are nice and sweet?

I disagree. I think someone who doesn't like music is by definition less passionate. This is my point.
