when you come into my restaurant at idylwild golf club, you know when you've had a reid drink. I have trademarked a little trick i learned from somewhere or other that never ceases to be a conversation piece amongst my customers. i don't know why, it's not that uncommon. but i like the individual flair it's given me.
here's what you do:
1. take the drink order (ice tea, water, soda, etc. we don't serve hard liquor, but we do serve beer and wine.)
2. make the drink. (steps one and two are standard fare. it get's a bit tricky when the straw enters the equation; steps three and onward.)
3. take a wrapped straw from the bar.
4. proceed to hold the top of the wrapped straw between your left thumb and index finger. (if left handed, reverse).
5. eyeball about a half an inch to an inch down from the top of the wrapper, and grab hold with your right index finger and thumb.
6. with your right hand, twist and tear.
7. pull the straw wrapper in a downward motion until the wrapper is off and the "fusalage" of the plastic straw is exposed.
8. place in drink, fusalage first, leaving the top of the wrapper (half inch to an inch) on the straw.
9. watch as your guests enjoy their beverage of choice, completely free of any germs from the server (yourself).

guys it's a small restaurant in a small town. these things are special to my people.
you should try the whole placing their drink on a brand new cardboard coaster with beer logo on it trick. then sit back and watch the tips roll in.
i try to steer clear of logos on the coaster i use for the restaurant. i know my customers pretty well, and they aren't changing thier minds about what they drink. it's just unnecessary spending, imo.
