seriously these guys don't even share the opening and closing ceremonies with the normal people, what's up with that?
Normal people?
The paralympics has its own torch relay, its own lighting of the flame and its own opening and closing ceremonies. The Paralympics run parallel to the games, related but different.

No comprende.
I was just trying to be condescending.

It worked.

what I'm trying to get at is that we live in this world where equality is an attractive idea. People with physical disabilities want to be acknowledged as "regular" members of society. Now I'm not suggesting that they should like compete in the same competitions as the olympic athletes because that would be totally offensive right? But maybe it would be nice if the paralympians were united in the same ceremonies and olympic activites as the other athletes, as a sign of solidarity, which would emphasise the idea of equality between between the two different kinds of atheletes/people.
and when I said normal people I meant like not retarded or whatever

A bit more than an 'attractive idea'. Essential.

Of course, because they are regular members of society, no inverted commas needed.

Offensive to some. They would want able-bodied people to take an interest in their Paralympics and take them seriously as sports-people before they thought of competing with the able-bodied. They would say they don't see able-bodiedness as a benchmark to aspire to or meet before they were treated equally. When equality is reached the Olympic committees might begin to think about how the games could be integrated, but 1) it would be a logistical nightmare, 2) people's attitudes and prejudices are such that we couldn't do it yet, and 3) as I said already, the Paralympics has its own long and complex history which deserves to be honoured and respected before people even think of joining up. Making the Olympics and the Paralympics the same thing is a nice idea on the surface, but comes with so many potential problems.

It would be nice. I'm just not sure the world is ready for it. But I hope that at the end of the games, both the Olympians and the Paralympians will be honoured by their countries. The UK media has done a pretty good job of honouring all their athletes of both games, and it's getting better year after year.

I hate the word 'retarded' but I know what you mean. I just don't see any 'normal' in anyone I've known. I think it's a dangerous concept. PJ-loving Internet users are not 'normal' either.
