Is that a real MTV executive? If so, that's pretty badass.

I think it's a little simplistic to put the blame solely on illegal downloads. Fact of the matter is, music distribution has modernized and videos are part of that. Putting music on youtube is (for the most part) free for the production company, actually generates ad revenue, can be viewed by anyone at any time (instead of having to wade through 2 hours of crap to watch the one video you care about) and is more easily shared and published on social media. You don't need a TV network with specific shows targeting specific demographics to show videos at certain times in order to sell records. You can reach them immediately wherever they are and provide a quick link to purchasing the music. It's just simpler.

That, the advent of reality television and illegal downloading all play a part in MTV's shift from music entertainment to dirt-cheap reality programming.

Here's the thing: Music videos are, at best, equally as vacuous as reality TV.

No. Of course there's a lot of crap, but at best (as you put it), there have been a number of amazing music videos over the years that are more than simple 3-minute adverts for records and instead are powerful pieces of short-form filmmaking, the constraints of the format being fertile grounds for creativity.

Yeah I was exaggerating. I agree (and I think you're spot on about the benefits of form constraints). But then again reality TV can be good too (depending on what you classify as reality TV--Cops is a lot better than Jersey Shore, for instance, but it's not really a part of the 2000s reality TV deluge).

November Rain's video comes to mind.

I assume you're referring to my ranking Cops over Jersey Shore.

You may have been exaggerating, but you were still mostly right.

The Real World killed MTV and gave birth to reality TV which dominates the channel and most other channels. Just like Deadliest Catch killed the Discovery Channel and by extension the History Channel and other channels of the like. Reality TV is cheap and even the reruns do better than music videos. MTV was dead long before downloading.

This still sounds like people are the problem, not programming.
