It was definitely a new kit since his 2006 sound resembles more like past setups he's used. You can also tell from the audience recordings that it wasn't the mixing on the boots. I think he just experimented with a new kit for the fun of it. The snare and kick drum were different for sure, almost had a "heavy metal" feel to it.
I think it's safe to say that on non-album tours (including VFC), Matt likes to switch it up. His kit in 2004 sounded like absolute dogshit.
