Apparently a tornado hit the festival and some stage equipment collapsed. Some people were hurt. :(

There are about 10 people injured. Broken arms & legs. Nothing too serious. Still a big bummer though... :|

Quote:
Venice, Italy - Strong winds and a hailstorm brought down several light towers at a rock concert in Venice, causing injuries among the crowd, the Ansa news agency reported Friday.

The accident took place ahead of a performance by the My Chemical Romance, one of the bands taking part in this year's Heineken Jammin' Festival in Venice.

Reports said at least eight fans sustained injuries, including broken limbs and concussion.

hopefully that is as bad as it got for anybody. considering how bad that sounded originally, that would be a relief.

can you even imagine if that happened while PJ was playing?

I am at the festival. Last night (IronMaiden) there were severe thunder storms during the day but by show time everything was beautiful and it was a great show.

Today, again thunderstorms and equipment collapsed. One person may be dead. Some people are saying one killed others are saying only injuries officially reported so far. Details are still coming out and everyone here is upset and confused. The park has been closed. There is equipment and trees down at the site.

It is all over the news here but everything is in Italian and I do not understand the language. We are still getting details. Tomorrow may also be cancelled. I suspect it will be, there is a lot of damage and a big mess.

A very tragic day here to have another death at a Pearl Jam festival show.

Take care everyone, please be safe wherever you are.

Mahlon

EDIT: changed death to 'unconfirmed', I hope it stays that way.

I hope you're wrong about the killed, I'm browsing the italian news and for now they all talk about injuries but no death

I got that (just recently) from someone who understands Italian. I have only read about injuries in English news I can find so I hope, perhaps, it is still a rumour. We are all trying to get more details here.

Thanks for giving hope that perhaps there has not been anyone killed.

From an Iron Maiden chat board:

Latest official news say that there are around 30 people injured; 2 of them are in critical conditions, but no one died.

So it looks like, for now, nobody has died. Sorry for the alarm, but it is a horrible day here in any case.

My friends just came back from the site a little while ago. They were literally right beside one of the towers that collapsed. They said everything was fine and there was a little rain starting when suddenly there was a couple big gusts of wind and things fell down.

They said it all happened in about two minutes from just those few gusts of wind. They were helping pull people out from under a tower that collapsed. They helped a guy get out and a girl who was in a little tent that was under the wreckage as well.

They took some pictures and video with their phones. Their pics look just like the ones from the news.

Some TV news here is still reporting a fatality but most news casts only say serious injuries.

Right now the sky is clear and the weather is beautiful. It is too bad this happened because tonight (like last night) is perfect for an outdoor show. The storms today and yesterday were just the weather blowing off all the high humidity.

Tomorrow's Aerosmith/Pumpkins show has also been officially cancelled. Some people are pissed that the structures were not set up more securely as this incident could easily have been avoided. It was not a tornado or anything of that sort. Just a few heavy gusts of wind that were gone as quickly as they arrived.

Here at our campground it is packed and everyone is drinking because we were all here for the festival and now there is nothing to do- but drink of course!

Many people came from a long way (my friends are from Australia) to see Pearl jam and there are many disappointed fans drowning their sorrows in beer and wine right now. It is a big party here now despite the nearby tragedy.

Thanks to everyone who shared reports from the scene. Does anyone know how serious the injuries are? Do we know if everyone will be alright?

Are they still going on the Vienna tomorrow?
