Just got back, Ben Harper made an appearance for No More and Hard Sun and Jack fucking Irons (!) showed up for Last Kiss. The set was great...highlights include Throw Your Arms Around Me, Thumbing My Way and that Arc is no joke in a theater.

i'll never live this down, my only chance to see jack on drums doing a pj song and i missed it. i said to myself i wouldnt be to surprised to see mighty jack fucking irons on drums during the ed tour. lucky fans tonight

I'm stoned and in a hotel somewhere near Reseda....but I vaguely remember a few things. Ed was very talkative tonight telling more (weird and funny ) stories. Asked the crowd to relax and not be as obnoxious as the crowd the night before. But he'd rather have that than everybody sitting on their hands being L.A. hipsters. Read an article about a door to door Vaccum Cleaner Salesman who ended up giving a kidney to a customer he just met. Before Dead Man he talked about Sean Penn, movies and introduced the Director of "I am Sam" in the audience. Said he had always loved to draw waves in school and now he oil paints waves. He ironically observed his thumbprint on one of his zippos to be the perfect picture of a wave. A really beautiful moment was a video birthday card Ed made for his soon to be 90 year old relative Margaret. He related the infamous story about grandma Pearls' jam and asked us all to sing happy birthday to Margaret. He asked the crowd to hold their lighters up and to cut them off all at the same time, for the effect of the candles being blown out. It was a sweet moment and Ed got it all on tape for her. He thanked us for that by giving wine to some lucky front rowers. Many more highlights, too many for one young stoned man from no-cal to remember. The ending of Millworker was amazing and the best I've heard so far. Picture in a Frame sounded flawless. This is a very long paragraph. See ya in SD

Brian Cohen, L.A. Ben Harper and former Pearl Jam drummer Jack Irons made surprise appearances last night (April 13) at the second of two Eddie Vedder solo shows at Los Angeles' Wiltern Theatre.
Harper dueted with Vedder on "No More," their contribution to the recent "Body of War" soundtrack/compilation album, and joined opening act Liam Finn and Eliza Jane Barnes for "Hard Sun."
Irons, who has made sporadic appearances with Pearl Jam since leaving the band in 1998, drummed on "Last Kiss" and, in tandem with Harper on slide guitar, helped Vedder power through a show-closing cover of "All Along the Watchtower."
Earlier in the evening, Finn joined Vedder for a cover of the Hunter and Collectors' "Throw Your Arms Around Me," which Pearl Jam frequently covers live.
Vedder's first solo tour concludes with shows tomorrow and Wednesday in San Diego.

When Eddie Vedder sang "There's no need to hide/we're safe here," it could have been the theme of the Pearl Jam frontman's solo turn at the Wiltern Saturday night. The first of two Los Angeles shows was a stunningly intimate perf, a low-key beauty that featured a quieter, more relaxed side of the singer than his often angst-ridden Pearl Jam persona.
With a cluttered set that could have been borrowed from a Neil Young solo tour (including guitar techs dressed in long white lab coats), and a setlist that included tunes by Pearl Jam, John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Cat Stevens, Tom Petty, and an aggressive guitar style that owed much to the Who's Pete Townshend, during the two-hour show Vedder displayed an easy command of a wide range of material. His rich baritone brought passion to his cover of Dylan's "Masters of War," tenderness to Stevens' "Trouble" and a sweet playfulness to "Drifting." He even showed a sense of humor, creating impromptu Christian rock songs to illustrate a commercial he heard earlier in the day, doing dead-on impressions of Matt Dillon and comedian Chris Rock and blaming the occasional miscue on a windowsill he banged his head into in the dressing room.
The center of the show was given over to the songs featured on the soundtrack to "Into The Wild" (the songs won a Golden Globe, which was given to the surprised singer midway through the set). Even divorced from director Sean Penn's gorgeous images, the songs retained their lovely mix of willfulness, modesty and awe. But the real thrill was saved for the final songs of first encore, the a capella "Arc."
Layering and looping his vocals into a reverent choir, finally adding a moaning solo that reflected his interest in Pakistani Q'wali singers, there really was no place for him to hide, but he was safe, playing the most adventurous music in a night of adventure for the aud that was willing to follow him wherever his muse took him.
Opening act Liam Finn also used effect and loops but to much less success. Performing with E. J. Barnes, and mixing live drums, vocals and guitars with tapes and loops, he brought a roaring energy to gentle folk-pop of "I'll Be Lightening" (Yep Roc) but at the expense of his songs, which lurched from section to section. Only an instrumental performed toward the end of his set reached the kind of bracing clangor he was reaching for.

I got excited when i first saw that youtube clip yesterday, thought it said singing for fans in LA . Thought Ed was gettin his acapella on or something.
More vague memories....Ed spoke about his daughter and her fav song is "No Ceiling" but she calls it "Reason i'll be". He messed up midway, joked about it since its only a 90 second song, and started over. Similar to Berkeley 1, the Obama banner came out. Ed again talked about the "sad" songs he wrote on his uke. Said its such a happy instrument but he was feeling down and wanted to bring his always happy "friend" down with him. Driftin was introduced as a song Chris McCandless would of liked. Society was played with Liam. They both joked about everybody always thinking Neil Finn wrote TYAAM, Liam said he found out when he was 13 and was heartbroken. I'm very excited that so far Ed has played almost every song he did at his great 2002 shows. We just need two more, Can't Keep and Longing to Belong. If you could not make this tour and want to hear these songs, I highly recommend you acquire these shows. For those who don't know you can hear the Royce Hall show at the great live site...

I didn't recognise any of the regular PJ people (apart from the tech and then it wasn't Ricky..I think it was Stone's usual tech). there was a big black guy that looked a bit like Pete but I don't think it was Pete.
