while i'm not too surprised they played so much from Backspacer... considering this was their first ever ACL taping i'm sorta bummed they didn't go for it a bit more and play stuff from most all of their records. i mean how amazing would this taping have been to open with Release, play Corduroy, Given To Fly, and close with Indifference at least thrown in there??

Yeah, they could have picked better older stuff/covers than Army Reserve, Driven To Tears and Inside freakin' Job.
Why is the setlist above in a spoiler?

Just Breathe (w/ strings) The End (w/ strings) The Fixer Johnny Guitar Amongst The Waves Army Reserve Driven To Tears Do The Evolution Got Some
Lukin (acoustic w/ strings) Red Mosquito (w/ Ben Harper) Inside Job Better Man Gonna See My Friend Porch
Personally, I would've been happy to see them play all of Backspacer plus Red Mosquito w/ Ben, No Way, Sonic Reducer and Porch. That would've been sweet.

Er, yeah, but I still don't get it.
If the band plays a show, even if the boot isn't released yet, do we not talk about what songs they played?
I just find it weird, that's all. I don't see how it's any different to any other gig.

Release and Oceans have never been officially filmed/released o anything, broadcast or dvd. Just a heads up.
Oceans is part of the officially released Unplugged DVD for Ten Reissue.
The tv broadcast will have to cut some of these songs, no? I'm hoping that the backspacer songs don't get cut in favor of better man.

A couple more tid bits:
Before Crazy Mary:
Ed introduces Boom and talks about Boom used to watch the show with his Pappy. On some island out in the pacific. And he said one day I'm going to play that fuckin' show. Boom has tears in his eyes and it is clearly an emotional moment. Ed says he's sure Boom's father is with them tonight and boom waves to the 'sky' and then knocks the back of his head like his dad is giving him a smack and he smiles. Crazy mary has one of the best moments of the night with Boom and Mike soloing back and forth.
The End: After try 2 Ed asks someone off stage if a note sounds right. Then he asks if it sounds right to the crowd. Everyone says yes. He says 'well I guess that is what counts, but I want to have fun too!'
At one point: Someone asks for a pick. Ed says he'll trade the guy for his suit coat. Leave the wallet in. Then he thinks and says, actually I've seen these go on Ebay and the go for an arm and a leg. At this point one of the wounded warriors in crowd holds up his prothetic leg. Ed grabs a pick from everyone and sticks from matt and had them to the guy. He then spends about 5 minutes signing various false appendages and thanking the service men.
At one point: Ed points to the capitol and talks about how when they played Austin years ago and he climbed to the top of the capitol with some of the other guys on the scaffolding that was there for repairs.
Before Johnny Guitar: Ed talks about one of Johnny's covers that had him sitting on a couch with two spandex clad women at his feet. Next to Johnny is a dog sitting the couch and Johnny is pointing to the dog with the 'gun' point and the album is called 'Ain't it a bitch'.
Before Evolution: Ed rambles. A lot. About evolving our inner selves.
Luikin: Ed tells the strings to play Em but avoid the third. He admits he has no idea what he's talking about and that is just what someone told him. "This song was written so a monkey could play it. I feel bad asking Virtuosos to play it"

According to my friend who is a local and has been to a bunch of these tapings, the producers pretty much make the artists stick to new material. She told me last week that it would be mostly Backspacer. Combine that with the typical laid back vibe of the show, and who was in the audience and the set starts to make more sense.
