I've a couple songs that I wish they would open with, but, alas, they do not (regularly or at all). I'm guessing others do to...

anyway

I haven't had a Release opener since 06 so I kind of want that.

I'm just hoping for Long Road. I've been to five shows without it and it's my second favorite opener.

That is a ridiculous stat.

Ann Arbor '94, it worked. Really well.

This would be totally out of left field but I've always thought Sleight Of Hand could be a good opener.

That could be interesting. I love when they open with stuff they rarely or never open with (Present Tense St. Louis 03 is pretty cool). SOH isn't the worlds most accessible song, and it could be kind of a cool way to turn some people on to it who don't really know/like it.

On the flip side, I've always wanted to hear Blood as an opener.

Yeah. I'd give a non-vital internal organ to hear that song live. That being said, I've been pretty lucky: Do The Evolution, Release, Love Boat Captain, Worldwide Suicide, Wash, Gonna See My Friend and Why Go.

I can't think of a single song that should be opening with that they're not already, I think virtually all of those suggested in this thread wouldn't work at all.

There's some they open with now that I think could be dropped, Better Man and Small Town should never open shows for instance (though the best PJ show I've ever seen had a Small Town opener). I'm not sold on Present Tense either, all of these songs belong later in the set.

I like the Present Tense opener, it works quite well in St. Louis '03. I also like the idea of moving traditional openers to mid set...I have the San Sebastian boot from 2000, and "Of The Girl" is mid set, and it fits nicely in the mix. Nowadays it's seems like they rotate between a certain set of songs for openers, and if those songs aren't played to start the show, they won't be played at all. To me, this is kinda disappointing because I'd love to hear songs like: Long Road, Oceans, Can't Keep, and Of The Girl all at the same show. If they open with any other song, you can pretty much rule hearing those songs out at any particular gig.

I don't care how many times they've done it...release is the proper opener.

I, too, think Jeremy would be a good opener. Sleight Of Hand- not so much. I really wish they'd use Breakerfall more.

I've had an eclectic group of openers at my shows (Releasex3, Why Gox2, Sometimes, Arc, Of The Girl, Betterman, Present Tense (awesome opener), Severed Hand, Last Exit, IO/Corduroy, Oceans, Worldwide Suicide, Hard To Imagine, Long Road), so I wouldn't mind adding more 'unusual' openers to that list. Alive, Do The Evolution, Jeremy, Porch, even Even Flow I think would be kind of cool.

I also agree with the idea that more 'standard' openers should get played elsewhere in the set. Hearing Long Road and Release in the encores of the San Diego 06 and Bonnaroo shows, respectively, was not only a welcome surprise, but really worked well, I thought.

And I still hope that, one day, they'll open with Yellow Ledbetter just for shits and giggles. Make it happen in Kansas City, Pearl Jam!

yeah really. I near shit myself when it opened @ Halifax, was happy when it opened Camden 1 08 and was eagerly awaiting the next song when it opened Mansfield 1 08.

I've never been crazy about the song, though I'd love to hear the No Code outtake for it, with Jack. A lot of the songs that seem extremely popular here, I'm not wild about...Release, Yellow Ledbetter, and Hard To Imagine to name a few.

Happened for me; DC 2006.

I don't know why I'm not crazy about those songs, but I'm just not. I'm super sick of Ledbetter and it closing 85% of the shows; give me Fuckin' Up as a closer anyday (I think Alive is a good one to close with too).

Release just doesn't do much for me, I'd rather hear Of The Girl, Sometimes, Long Road, or any of the other songs they open with. I know most here seem to love it as an opener, but not this guy.
