After about 4 months of working on my new compilation, I’ve finally finished!

While I was working on my ManOfTheHour compilation and listening to a lot of the 2000 bootlegs I realized that I really wanted to make another one to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of what I believe is the greatest Pearl Jam tour of all time. I think that 2000 was a really important year for the band and through massive tragedy and small triumph it has really helped shape and define the band today. Their live shows in 2000 were an incredible experience and anyone who was lucky enough to see them that year knows exactly what I’m talking about.

While ten years later, I think Binaural is still their most underrated record, it isn’t until these songs are played live (especially how they played these songs in 2000) that you get the true sense of how great of an album it really is. While I was making this compilation I actually fell in love with Nothing As It Seems and Sleight Of Hand, the only two songs from Binaural that I just had never been able to get into in the past.

I spent a lot of time working on the setlists for this compilation and really tried to use a good mix of shows from the whole tour. Obviously some shows are absolute standouts and in some cases I used multiple songs from those shows and cities. Also there is good reason why a few of these selections are on the Touring Band DVD as they are absolutely the best of the tour in my opinion and in some cases the best of all time (Parting Ways from Lubbock and Daughter from Jones Beach to name a few). I have included a fourth disc of songs that didn’t quite fit into what I was going for, including a lot of awesome covers played throughout the tour. I listened to over 60 complete shows from this tour while I was preparing this compilation and scanned through the remaining looking for any missed gems.

This compilation contains no intro’s or in between song banter from Eddie, It is purely about the songs and that’s it! While my editing is nothing great I do love how each disc flows and I would say that the Europe disc has ended up being my favorite.

I know people around here will appreciate the time and effort that goes into something like this, it's a lot of work and I hope people enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed making it.

The compilation is available as a torrent on Demonoid right now but until there is more than just myself seeding it, it's going to take awhile to download. How did I know that would be your first question.

Sorry it's only available in that awful mp3/256kbps format. Which I gather from around here is considered barely even listenable!

I actually really like a lot of your choices. Especially from the NA1 disc. I'm in the process of downloading the whole tour in FLAC and I might use this to put it together myself.

Cool! Sorry I didn't mean to come off sounding like a jerk.
I just don't get the whole FLAC thing. It doesn't matter if I'm listening on my house stereo, my computer, my car or my ipod, I honestly cannot tell a difference. As soon as I download a FLAC I convert it to a high quality mp3 and call it good.

I'll admit that in a lot of cases the difference is small enough that it doesn't matter to me either. Like on my laptop I can't really tell the difference, but if I plug my nice headphones in I can. One of the main reasons I like having things in lossless is because I may want to edit the file down at some point for whatever reason and every time you edit and resave and mp3 you run it through the process again and lose fidelity. So if I'm going to do stuff like that I want to start with a lossless copy.

Yeah, you pretty much can't edit an mp3 without making it an mp3 of an mp3.

chud's right - everytime you process something to MP3 (ie: if you make an MP3 out of what's already an MP3) you lose more and more fidelity.

I'll admit, I am a confirmed MP3 snob, but I think there's good reasons for it. It's not just the reduced fidelity that bothers me, I also find the overall sound less engaging than a lossless source - lossless music just sounds more musical and enjoyable. I don't use lossy files even for listening on my iPod/iPhone, the bigger file size is a very small price to pay for getting deeper enjoyment out of the music for me.

Nevertheless, this looks like a pretty cool compilation - I love the 2000 tour too.

Just so we are all clear here, I have the entire tour in FLAC, that's where I took the files from. So no they started out Lossless.

I never edit in mp3 format, it's like sleeping with a crack whore.

So you did all the editing in WAV and then made MP3's?

There's a flac plugin for adobe audition. I think it works for cool edit too.

So, just so it's cleared up, did you do the editing with lossless files? Or did you convert the lossless files to MP3 and then edit?

If it's the latter, then yes, that's going to result in seriously degraded sound quality - but if it's the former, you would still have a lossless copy of the finished editing for the fussier amongst us, yeah?

I have always found the best way to keep quality is FLAC/WAV(edit)/FLAC/

I was never too fussed about Flac/mp3 previously but I've certainly become much snobbier, at least for live recordings. There's a definite difference for sure, esp. on my good headphones (these are like Mum's good scissors - kiddies no touchy touchy).

I am gonna go out on a limb here and guarantee that conversion to mp3 was the last step of the process, solely for file size and convenience. You don't put as much thought into a compilation such as this and edit in anything but lossless. No crack whores for a princess such as this.
