I was thinking today that so many people judge a particular show on setlist alone. I'm certainly guilty of it myself at times but I wonder what is it we're looking for? Do you agree that certain songs automatically make you think a show is good or bad. Does the perfect setlist actually exist?
For example songs like In Hiding, Sad, Faithfull, In My Tree, Smile, Tremor Christ, Satan's Bed all have huge setlist cred in my eyes and if the show opens with Release it's almost guaranteed to be great but on the flip side if they play Last Kiss, The Fixer, maybe Just Breathe, Comeback, or Inside Job and open with Small Town, that setlist looks like shit on paper to most people (myself included).
Oh and also rarities, Using the Vancouver show as an example, should I have been happy to see Bee Girl performed for the second time, because I wasn't. How about a rarity like Man Of The Hour or Hard To Imagine or Can't Keep. I don't know I just think they could do much better with the rarities they choose to play but it probably has a lot to do with the fans wanting to hear stupid shit because it's so rare.
Long Road Do the Evolution Last Exit Even Flow Sad Can't Keep Parachutes Severed Hand Comatose Brain of J Faithfullll No Way In My Tree Hard to Imagine Smile Gonna See My Friend Animal Corduroy ___________________ Sometimes Sleight of Hand Light Years Immortality Improv w/Neil Young I Got Shit w/Neil Young Fuckin' Up w/Neil Young ___________________ Given to Fly All Night Johnny Guitar / Improv Daughter Olé Alive Yellow Ledbetter w/Chileno EV
Ok, here's one of my favorite shows (if you guess the date/venue then good for you), you tell me if it has setlist credibility:
Set 1 Release Hail, Hail Animal Even Flow Given To Fly Corduroy MFC Habit Faithfull Daughter (Beginning to See The Light) (W.M.A.) Wishlist Nothingman Immortality Rearviewmirror Brain Of J. Black Do The Evolution
Encore 1 Breath State Of Love And Trust Off He Goes Leatherman Better Man (Save it for Later) Mankind Baba O'Riley
Encore 2 Indifference Alive

I think the openers make a huge difference for me for "setlist cred."
I'm really glad I've never been to a show that's opened with Small Town. Severed Hand is probably my least favorite one I've seen. I'd probably avoid listening to boots that start with either one of those, unless I've heard they were really good.

9/11/98. Easy.

I could totally live with that setlist, but this one is my personal favorite:
Set: Rearviewmirror Whipping Go Animal Dissident Even Flow Why Go Jeremy Glorified G Daughter/(ABitW-II)/(WMA) Blood Last Exit Black Alive Porch/(Dirty Frank) enc 1: Sonic Reducer Not for You Elderly Woman Rockin’ in the Free World enc 2: Indifference enc 3: Throw Your Arms Around Me (Ed solo)
I've actually really liked seeing the sets and then guessing which show it was. I don't know if I should be proud or embarrassed that I knew both very quickly.
Hmmm...here's what I'm listening to currently, fairly easy to identify I believe:
Go, Corduroy, Grievance, State of Love and Trust, Tremor Christ, Elderly Woman, Insignificance, Last Exit, Animal, In My Tree, I Got Shit, (Romanza)/Better Man/(Save It For Later), Even Flow, Daughter/(WMA), Thin Air, Jeremy, Given To Fly, Rearviewmirror enc 1: Nothing As It Seems, Last Kiss, Spin The Black Circle, Crazy Mary, Parting Ways enc 2: Fuckin’ Up

Detroit 2000.
When I really think about what separates a so-so setlist from a great one, it's the balance of how the songs flow together and the amount of material from Vitalogy through Binaural, the band's songwriting peak.
