This is not even close. I watched the clip of Axl eating shit at the beginning of Sweet Child O Mine and then hung around to hear what he sounded like. He isn't even a shell of himself. If I had listened to it blind, I never would have guessed it was Axl. Ed is still Ed. He may have been sick or his vocal chords may be just adjusting to suddenly singing after a long layoff, but I think he still sounds pretty good most of the time. People on this message board are just kind of assy about everything not being 1994.
he could do himself (and his craft) some favors and stop the smoking & drinking (during shows i mean).

Nope, I just want Ed to accept that it's 2012.

Ed does not have a bad voice, but it's an appreciably different instrument now than it was fifteen or twenty years ago. Trying to sing Blood now would be akin to listening to McCready play the song with an out-of-tune guitar; it doesn't matter how much he's feelin' it, it's going to sound bad.

The majority of songs Ed seems to really struggle with are those from the first three albums and a significant chunk from the most recent two - the latter is especially confusing, since you'd imagine he knew they were going to be tough vocal lines to sing when he wrote them. With the exception of Do the Evolution, Habit and Grievance, almost all of the band's No Code through Riot Act material seems much easier to handle, yet they're under-represented in setlists.

I hope Ed works with, rather than against, his current capabilities on their new material. His voice at his solo shows sounds great because he's singing material he's suited to.
