Soundboard Remasters Series

I've started uploading MP3 versions of all the shows as well - they will be available in a sub-folder here.

No prob. Glad to help. I'm actually the guy who patched 11/1/95 and swapped the channels (so Stone is on the right and Mike on the left) on Seattle 98. I did that years ago.

I also know how both soundboard tapes were acquired, but don't feel comfortable sharing that on a public board. You'll have to buy me a beer someday. (There is a big hint on Seattle 98 before 'Off He Goes').

I'm sure there is some audience stuff of mine in your collections. I have not taped since I had a disaster in Bellingham 2000. No usable audio ala Mexico City. I decided to just live stress free and enjoy the music.

Jack pisses all over the rest of the PJ drummers, to be fair.

With the exception of maybe Dave A when he played Go.

Baba was not included because only an audience source exists for this track.

I know that this has been discussed ad nauseum, but I cannot find a thorough discussion of it:

Does remastering ever (or can it) involve re-mixing? For example, Mike is lower in the mix on 3/17/1995 than Stone, but I'm guessing that in order to fix that discrepancy you would have to have the original individual "tracks" of the show (ie, Ed vocal, crowd, drums, etc on separate tracks). I get how Spenno "fixed" 7/22/1998 by boosting up the low end across the board, but you can't boost "Mike guitar" on a stereo, unless (naivety speaking here) you boosted the left channel's balance (but normalized the volume). Would that work? If so, could we remaster some of the officially awful "official" boots that suffered from awful mixes but still have the channels separated (say for example, Columbus 2010)? The all-time worst offender (non-official boot) is 11/4/95 (was Mike even there?), but I think that is mono, so I have no idea how that mix could be improved upon.

The secondary question, which I'm genuinly just curious about, is in regards to these shows, what did "remastering" entail?

Thanks a ton...I super appreciate the work, and I've listened to 1/14/95 about 10 times back-to-back (I adore this show), but have been thinking about this.

Mixing is taking all the individuals tracks and editing them in relation to each other, as you suggested. Mastering involves doing work on a single mixdown of all the tracks, which is what JWB did here.

I actually tried this, years ago.

It doesn't really work. It ruins the whole stereo image as there's more than just Mike's guitar coming through that left channel - if you just listen to that speaker, you'll note that you've got a lot of Jack's drums, Ed's vocals and Jeff's bass audible too, so all of those will also end up being boosted and the whole mix will sound very lopsided.

I've never been crazy about the mix of that Melbourne show either, it's a shame as it's a great show.

The thread about these over at the pit is entertaining.

http://forums.pearljam.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=183871

Seems as though some people take offense that these might be "better" than the SV series, even though that isn't why this project was done. :?

Yeah, some dude was minimally involved in the SV process and got offended because someone topped him.

I recall a similar reaction here when I once criticised the SV series. The soundboard shows (Atlanta 94 and Melbourne 98 in particular) from that collection sound much worse than even the un-futzed with promo CD sources - but hey man, have some respect: people worked hard to spread that poor quality work...
