Jack really is tremendous, and I'm definitely a Jack dork. Case in point, I  when he gets really into something and lets out this "yeah!". You just know they're groovin it. See: beginning of RVM 1/14/95, Red Mosquito jam on No Code, and I believe Immortality jam on self-pollution.

I, too, am a total Jack dork. Does anyone else find it a bit weird that both the band and Brett have commented that Jack wasn't drumming very well on that 1998 Australian tour? From memory, Brett commented on it in the PJ20 book and I think Jeff alluded to it when he was on PJ Radio. I can't help but think they're engaging in a bit of guilt assuagement for dumping Jack for Matt, since the original idea was that, according to band statements from the time, Matt was only helping out for the tour and Jack would be returning as soon as he was able to. Obviously things didn't work out that way. From evidence of the recordings (and attending one of the shows in person), Jack was playing great despite whatever personal demons he was battling at the time - I can't think of a time the band sounded better, to be honest. |

They might be retroactively equating his personal health with his performance, too. Who knows. I agree he sounds great though. But I always felt like the No Code tour was the best document of Jack's ability to affect the band's live sound, though. Eddie sounded better in '98, mostly, but there are a few things from '96 in particular that really showcase big differences between how he and Matt interpret material. "Off He Goes" is the biggest example I can think of--it seriously goes from being a near-shuffle, very light on its feet, to a straight ahead 4/4 rock number. The guy had the touch. |

Yeah, that's it. Jack was always giving 100%, working in a lot of details and accents and subtleties live to a degree that Matt has never even come close to trying to replicate in his own way. |

These really are fantastic. I've been listening to the shows in order and I've made it to Atlanta. I never realized that the boot that I paid $50 for in 1994 had the talking between songs edited out. So, that was a pretty cool revelation. Thanks again for all the work! |

Here's the thing about Atlanta - all of the various CD releases sound exactly the same but have various degrees of editing. The 100% complete show was released as a radio station promo - and would normally be considered the best source - but the spectrals look awful and indicate that some kind of lossy conversion has happened. The Australian promo set is nice - complete setlist, great lossless sound - but it is heavily edited between tracks. This is likely where your bootleg was sourced from. I imagine there are a lot of people who have the Aussie promo and the bootlegs made from it and don't realize that it is incomplete. So what I have done with this remaster was to take the nice Aussie promo source and patch it with the radio station promo. The patches are undetectable because both sources are based on the same, untampered recording. Then, after some other fills and fades were applied in the proper places, I remastered the sound to more closely match an official boot from, say, the US Binaural Tour for example, which is IMO gold standard of official boots. |

Mine could be the Australian promo. I actually bought it +/- 2 weeks after the show, so I always assumed that it was just a recording of the 99x Atlanta broadcast, but that wouldn't account for the editing. But until yesterday I didn't realize that it had been edited minus one spot when Ed is introducing Better Man. I've never kept up with the various sources. I had the one I had, it sounded good, blah blah blah, but this is much better and I'm glad to have it. |

Fred Evans, Bill Graham and I (some of the SV stuff is from us) made an EQ setting in Cool Edit Pro and ran each show through the same setting . Although, I'm sure the mastering techniques have improved over the years. There was quite a bit of' space' to work with in the wav's as they were not even normalized. We also fixed MFC/Untitled in Lisbon. The first 2-3 songs on Paris CD2 are mono, nothing could be done about that. |

As there is a cut at the track mark. I think (without looking at my silver CDs) the actual performance was Untitled-> Last Kiss ->MFC and the CD was screwed up so it goes Last Kiss->Untitled -> MFC. Again, listening to the silver it is obvious in the tracking and the abrupt crowd noise change. EDIT : Even Flow and RVM from Paris are mono. |
