That setlist looks fantastic.
I find the lack of Backspacer comforting.

On that topic, even though I'm not in camp Backspacer the more I hear The Fixer live on the boots the more I appreciate that it 'works' live with 20,000 people. It's still a song I'd rather NOT see on a setlist if I had the choice but I understand why the band keeps playing it.

Agreed. I couldn't care less for the song on the album, but live it's actually pretty fun.

I'd prefer to hear The Fixer over either Got Some or Just Breathe. I like Matt's Fixer demo a whole bunch: the guts of that song are solid, the end product just didn't quite gel.

I do wish they'd play it in its original key, though.

That's the thing though... they 'fixed' the original key to what it is now.

The running joke would be if the song just constantly changed, with the band "fixing" what they thought they should. Then to listen to the original, and 10 years later the product of evolution the song constantly went through.

There's an audience recording of this out there now. Through "Amongst the Waves" it's pretty smoking, with a (surprisingly) excellent "Breakerfall".

Maybe they've still got it after all.

Edit: Now into "Present Tense", this show is EXCELLENT. Only one screw up (and it isn't bad, just the beginning of "Present Tense", which they restart). "Not For You" features a very welcome original ending (like on the album)! There's a really awesome short version of Van Halen's "Eruption" after "Even Flow". "Even Flow" clocks in under 6 minutes. Ed sounds really good for this time in the band. And best of all? They don't seem to be rushing songs...everything seems to be at a good pace.

And there's almost no Backspacer. I think I'll be purchasing this boot when they release it.

Edit 2: Ed screws up "Do the Evolution" because the crowd singing the guitar riff causes him to lose his place. He makes up for it by really giving it all, with some nice vintage screams throughout.

"Blood" is like it's been for awhile - great musically but weak vocally. A chant of "War (What Is It Good For)" in the middle is pretty cool though. So far the show is still great, though you can tell Ed begins to run out of steam in the encores, which seems to be the MO now. I'd still highly recommend this boot though.

I think that this version of blood is fine. Even vocally. Of course not perfect or anything but one of the better recent ones.

Another good thing: Betterman is sung entirely by Ed and rather short

Edit: What are you guys thinking about the improv? Not too bad eh?

New song? It certainly doesn't sound like an improv to me.

Re: Blood - I've been listening to a lot of 1993-1994 stuff lately. I know it's an unfair comparison...but still. If he can't do it like that, or even 2003 - 2006, then he shouldn't do it at all.

Yeah it´s the old thing: Skip songs like Blood, Fixer, Amongst the waves and play songs like All or none, Fatal, NAIS instead cause these are the ones Ed can sing brilliantly!
However having been at this show, Blood was fantastic and I dont think I would have liked a slow song at this point in the set.
Maybe Pearl Jam needs more heavy songs that dont rely on Eddie screaming like crazy.

I too would like to see more songs like Insignificance and Grievance.

Argh, you quoted my terrible typo...

On topic: Insignificance yes, but Grievance? Great song but it´s also quite screaming-based isnt it?

Yeah, he's struggled with Grievance since 2003.

But yes, I agree with you: heavy songs that don't require banshee-like screaming would be awesome. Maybe he can ask Lanegan for some tips.

Agreed, it's far too rehearsed to be some thrown-off improv.

An instrumental taste of a song from the new record?
