Those Vampire wines are pretty good. My wife is really into the Anne Rice Vampire novels, and my brother in law got her a bottle of their merlot awhile back as kind of a gag gift. It was some good stuff. I'd recommend it for sure.

Nice, i plan to have a bottle of the Vampire Cabernet Sauvignon tonight or tommorow

I heard about Mondavi dying, the only bottle I've seen of his is the crazy expensive Cab thats locked up and is something like 150 bucks. Does he have any more affordable good wines that are worth a try? (i'll go as high as maybe 30 or 40 bucks if its great)

On the White side of things, i tried Gazela Vinho Verde. It costs about 5.99 and has about 9% alcohol. Not bad

Recommend a wine for a beer drinker who has never really gotten into wine and doesn't want to spend a lot of money.

The white I always go for is Trevor Jones Virgin Chardonnay. Very palatable to someone who doesn't drink alot of wine, and only costs around 12-14 bucks.

Ruffino Aziano 2005 is damn good, and relatively cheap too.

Probably my favorite inexpensive red. I seem to be having trouble finding any vintage locally, as of late.

Their Grand Reserve was excellent. Wish it was still around.

My dad was just railing on that Fat Bastard stuff at dinner the other night. He's a wine snob though, so what does he know?

I was looking through my dad's cellar the other night, and he has at least four dozen vintage wines (many of them classic Bordeauxs that would likely go for $3-400 a pop in a liquor store that knew what it was doing) pre-1990. He's got a '72 Gloria St. Julien for chrissakes.

But anyway, we busted out an '86 Barbaresco with a nice steak the other night that blew my pants off. I love that my dad has ridiculous taste in wine. We went to this French place in LA for Bastille Day, and we brought along an 89 Chateau Margaux with us because the corking fee was only $2 and it'd been burning a hole in my dad's cellar... so we sit down, the waiter goes and gets his bottle opener, comes back, checks the label and nearly drops it (I knew it was a good wine, but I didn't know how good)... he goes, "do you know what this is?" My dad said something like, "yes, it's my bottle." Guy pours and leaves (I hadn't tasted it yet), and I turn to my dad and asked him what the deal was. Turns out it's a $700 bottle of wine that we drank for $2. :haha: Heaven in a bottle.

A few recommendations from my most recent wine tasting tour in the Santa Rita hills:

http://www.almarosawinery.com/
http://www.gaineyvineyard.com/
http://www.fessparker.com/

And if you can even find it, Foxen wines (their 30 Range West blend is arguably the most magical thing I've ever tasted) are a new up-and-comer in the biz, and they're only fit to get better. Amazing stuff, but their operation is dinky. Not sure if you can buy it outside Cali.

If I'm at an unfamiliar restaurant or one with a paltry wine list, I'm usually going white, and I'm usually reaching for the Kendall Jackson Chard or the Sonoma Cutrer. Reds are a bit harder to peg, but you can never go wrong with a nice Chianti Classico or anything blended with a Sangiovese.

And while I'm at it, keep your eye on Fess' daughter, who made what amounted to like a barrel and a half of this one blended wine that was so amazing we had to buy two because the supply was so low. It's called Tessa Marie, and I'm pretty sure you'll just have to settle for keeping your eye on it for now (and it's cheap as fuck for how good it is) until it catches wind.

It constantly amazes me how quickly Rieslings caught on. I can remember reading an article a few years back on how the sweetness of the production was going to limit its success (which I agreed with because I'm not a big fan), but damn... Washington has become the capital for that shit.

If you like that stuff, check out Semillon wines. It's a grape (like the Riesling) that's been blended with others forever because it wasn't thought to be able to stand on its own, but vineyards everywhere are now just doing 100% whites with those varietals because the demand is there. It's a sweeter, fruiter white than the oaky stuff you usually get in that region of California. Still not my stuff, but some people like it.

I went to a Vineyard a week or so ago when I was on holiday for the first time.

You know what though? I can't remember what the wine was called. ...something 'Batle'. It's a wine made in Mallorca. Some of it was really nice and some of it was just what I call 'chugging' wine. It was an interesting experience though and not nearly as snooty as I thought it would be. :)

Damn you guys make me want to have a drink and I'm suppose to start a little non-drinking spell!

favourites (I'm strongly biased towards French, and South-West France in particular..it's where I grew up, that's what I know best)

Reds:
French SW: Minervois ('Laurent Cabaret' a familly fav.. but you can't find it even as close as 70 miles from the producing region unfortunately), Corbieres, Cahors, Fronton, Gaillac
Pinot Noir for non-french, but rarely drink it 'cos they're too expensive.
I like the chilean mixes too, and Sicilian ones.

White:
Muscadet for dry, Monbazillac or Sauternes for sweet.

Rosé: well gris in fact, as in Listel Gris :luv:

I LIKE oakey wines. I don't know anyone else that does... I guess there must be some otherwise they wouldn't make them. I kinda like that earthy taste. :)

I'm a wine taster. So I have no preferences really. It just depends on what's for dinner. But when in doubt and while not eating a meal, I go with a white merlot.

I picked up a bottle of Firefly and a bottle of Matchbox from this winery recently. I chose these without tasting, based upon their descriptions. These are a good indication of what my tastes generally are.

I tasted some wine from the Carousel winery in the U.P. of Michigan last summer. And they had a really awesome blueberry wine, but they were sold out! :x

This vintage has gone up in price recently. You used to be able to pick it up for 12 to 13 bucks, and now it's anywhere from 14 to 17. Still worth it, though.
