The sad part is I would want to enjoy my double chocolate cupcake. Who wants to eat as fast as they can in the name of sport?

Also, is this a gay event?

Yeah, I don't remember what any of my food tasted like. It flew over my tastebuds w/o registering.

No, that event comes in September. http://gaytravel.about.com/gi/dynamic/o ... org/pride/

DOUGHMAN leaves much for digestion
BY MONICA CHEN : The Herald-Sun

May 24, 2009

DURHAM -- Runners raced along Ninth Street Saturday morning toward Dain's Place, where a crowd whooped enthusiastically for their teammates and racers wolfed down baskets full of "Portable Defribrillators" to the tune of "Eat It" by Weird Al Yankovic.

It was officially an eat-off.

More than 200 racers made up 51 teams competing in the second annual DOUGHMAN quadrathlon -- a typical triathlon plus eating -- on Saturday to raise money and awareness for South Eastern Efforts Developing Spaces' (SEEDS) Durham Inner-city Gardeners (DIG) program, which provides inner-city teens the opportunity to grow organic produce in an environmentally and socially sustainable space.

The relay's starting line was at Blu Seafood at 8 a.m., where competitors wolfed down plates of crab macaroni and cheese with pancetta before racing to the next site, Four Square.

From there on, another teammate would chow down before rushing to the next spot, and so on to Nosh, Dain's and Daisy Cakes before the team ran together to Durham Central Park on Foster Street.

All told, the food ingested and, hopefully, digested, included crab macaroni and cheese at Blu, Bull City BLT from Four Square, "Tomato Triple Threat" that included fried green tomatoes and bacon at Nosh and Dain's heartstopping beef burger with bacon, chili, cheese and hot dogs. At the last stop, Daisy Cakes provided cupcakes with candied bacon or strawberry shortcakes.

The DOUGHMAN was a test of athleticism that carried a higher likelihood than usual of indigestion.

"I would never do it because I have a sensitive stomach," said Christine Wall, a volunteer who oversaw Dain's, as she checked off the teams departing from the site.

Pae Wu, chairwoman of the event's organizing committee, said the relay race had ballooned -- pun intended -- in popularity this year. Last year's event had 14 teams. This year, it had grown by word of mouth and drew teams from New Orleans, Atlanta and France.

The event also added an evening banquet this year, and Wu estimated the total raised could be $10,000.

DOUGHMAN also added some star power this year with Adam Richman, host of the Travel Channel's Man V. Food, as a participant. Cameras followed Richman and other participants around as they ran, biked and swam around Ninth Street and downtown. Richman injured his foot during the race.

Richman was also in Durham this week to shoot his "Battle with Backyard BBQ" for the show.

"At its core, the DOUGHMAN is about celebrating Durham's vibrant community and gastronomy" said Wu, chair of the DOC, "and anything we can do to showcase all the diverse cultural riches available to us here in Durham, while also promoting the amazing work of the DIG youth, is something we strive to accomplish."

The restaurants all donated their food, and Wu emphasized that the dishes were created from local ingredients and were not super-sized for the race. Unlike the Krispy Kreme Challenge in Raleigh, which benefits the N.C. Children's Hospital, the DOUGHMAN wasn't about gluttony and inducing vomit.

The event attracted people with a greater range of skills this year, said Wu, who just received her Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Duke University. They ranged from the serious athletes to those who just loved food.

"It's just about enjoying good, local, healthy foods -- well, to a certain extent, and then doing an exercise," she said.

The winning team was the Not-So-Fantastic-Four, who wore matching camouflage shirts with an upside down 4.

When asked what they won, they replied, "Nothing. Respect?"

I would have liked it if they referred to him as B in the article.

All the original slots sold out in 15 minutes. They put 7 additional slots on ebay. I've been outbid on 4 so far. Anyone want to donate to inner-city kids in Durham?

Fuckity FUck! I have to eat a yogurt parfait. Bike 10 miles. Then eat a plate of BBQ, fried chicken, and hush puppies!

Here's our support vehicle.
