Took a special trip to Whole Foods and was disappointed with the varieties. Still, picked up Honeycrisps, Jonagolds, Fujis and Granny Smiths. All organic, with the Fujis and Granny Smiths being locally grown.

Surprisingly enough, the Jonagolds were the best of this bunch.

I bought a bushel of organic honeycrisps from a small local farmer a couple of weeks ago. They are by far my favorite apple and I have tried a LOT of them.

Picked up some Jonagolds from a farm and some Honeycrisps from the grocery store. The Jonas were much better. That bothered me.

Surprised the shit out of me too because I believe Honeycrisps are in prime harvest season right now. Makes me wonder if they are shoving the old stuff out before they flood stores with the new harvest.

I think it may have been a terrible season for apples where I live in the northeast. The honeycrisps at the farm looked awful and I couldn't bring myself to buy them. The Jonas were much better looking, but still few and far between. I'm hoping you're right though, and that the new harvest will be a big improvement. Plus, I want more variety. Its pretty basic right now.

This has been a terrible apple season in Western NY. We had an early spring then a quick frost and then spring again and it ruined this year's crop.

So I tried the honeycrisp. A little sweet for me but a damn fine apple for sure. Those things are huge though, same problem I have with pink ladies.

Don't forget, Sunday is Apple Day! Many orchards will have special events this weekend.

a shady nook beneath the arching branches of an apple orchard can be a dark place indeed

The joy of an apple from a good orchard can not be ruined by the rot found inside the hearts of men.

Nice article in the Wall Street Journal (I believe last week) about the record apple harvest in Washington state. A lot of the fruit, however, will be wasted because the growers can't find enough help to pick it.

Caution is advised when considering any orchard investment..In order to meet your financial and economic goals, all competitive advantages and disadvantages of tree fruit production in your region must be determined and fully understood..
