honeycrisp are my favourites as well but since i can rarely get some at my local grocery stores, i go with royal gala.

Anyone who pretends to be an apple connoisseur, yet picks gala as their favorite variety is full of shit.
The only reason to buy a gala is when nothing else is available.

To be fair, they are pretty much available all year. They just have no "pop" to me, just a bland mellow taste, which is why they are good for sauce.

a few years ago, the local whole foods carried pinata apples for a few weeks, and they quickly ascended my list of apple favorites. i have been unable to find them since.
