Doug, have you ever had an old-fashioned?

yes, I love bitters

Gin and tonic is tough to beat, but old-fashioneds and mojitos might be my cocktails of choice.

you can't really expect to be taken seriously debating the merits of stimulus versus austerity whilst drinking a mojito, can you?

do you think i'd ever order such a drink around anyone willing and able to engage in such a debate? that's why i'm so intent on being cocktail-diverse

do you own anything chino?

Big decision. Don't fuck it up. The night may well depend on it.

A Manhattan with Rye Whiskey instead of Bourbon is pretty damn tasty.

Pub fare affords you lots of cocktail options. Thai is much more delicate in terms of pairings, to be sure.

Maybe it's best to pick the drink first, then decide what to eat... Is there a cocktail you're craving?

I prefer it with bourbon, but rye is my go to when I want to mix it up. Big fan of the Rittenhouse Rye in a Manhattan.

That's a good one. Have you tried this stuff:

It's pretty good, not great but I got it on sale and was pleasantly surprised.

I've given it thought and since I am on beer #2 right now, I may just stick with having a whisky or scotch neat...

Seen it a few times, but yet to give it a whirl. How would you describe the taste?

Pub fare.

Thai spices might fuck with the whiskey/scotch too much. You could strike a fun combo, but more than likely you'll just cramp your palette.

Not as heavy as other Rye Whiskeys...it's a bit lighter, and more easy drinking. It's actually probably best used for a mixer, and good in the summertime when you may want lighter, more refreshing drinks. I tried it in a Manhattan, and with just Club Soda, and both worked well.

ya, my wife agrees on the pub fare tonight as well...the "cook" there is a good friend of ours and last night she said she would have a homemade white bean and ham soup on the menu tonight along with a butternut squash dish...
