i think i'll aim for something with tuna and a bit of heat next time
is the sushi at whole foods any good?
the spicy tuna roll is one of my all-time faves. speaking of heat, were you putting dabs of wasabi on that sushi, mister?
grocery store sushi can be okay, but definitely not as good as the freshly made stuff. i'd imagine whole foods sushi would be better than other chains though.
i know, right? my neighborhood market has a sushi bar and they always have free rolls sitting there for the taking. i indulge because i'm a sushi junkie.
i think it's partly how it's prepared, but it's also a certain kind of glutinous asian rice. that being said, we have a rice cooker and can usually get rice pretty sticky by using it.
i'm usually good with two, but three's not out of the question. did you delve into nigiri or any fusion rolls, thodoks?
no, and i'm not yet familiar with sushi distinctions and was hoping to apprentice under the direction of a wise and knowledgable connoisseur
there are rolls like the california or spicy tuna where the ingredients are rolled in seaweed then encased in sticky rice - this seems to be the most popular version of sushi in this country. fusion rolls are the same, but incorporate non-traditional ingredients and often drizzle sauces onto the roll and even deep fry ingredients. rolls are also referred to as maki.
nigiri is a "block" of sticky rice topped with raw fish. this is probably my favorite style (especially tuna) but it's not as economical as the rolls. i'll sometimes treat myself to one or two pieces and then order a roll to fill me up.
sashimi is straight seafood and a bowl of rice on the side. this is good but can be sort of a pain to eat since the rice isn't caked together and i don't use chopsticks on a daily basis.
although there are more styles of sushi, these seem to be the three most common i've seen in western restaurants.

fusion rolls should be experienced by all sushi enthusiasts, but at the end of the day, nothing beats the basic traditional form which allows the fish's natural flavors to shine.
i also love miso soup. makes me feel all good inside.
