If you don't tip at least 15% or more, you're an asshole.
Really no service deserves less than 15%; good service deserves at minimum 20-25%. You're a cheap ass if you want to argue about this.
Most of the time, if people think they got bad service, they usually are the ones that suck. Generally, no server purposefully gives bad service, so try to treat your server like a human being and not a servant. Everyone can make a mistake, unless someone brings me out a plate of diarrhea poo, I'm usually laid back and nothing much bothers me.
I also find that the people who you see always complaining about getting bad service at places, tend to get bad service everywhere. Coincidence?

I usually just throw about a fourth of the check down, because as a rule of thumb, if I'm out to eat at a place that deserves tips, it's with a girl. Otherwise, I'm a poor college kid and I'm eating at moes--SEGWAY--What do you think of those non-sit-down restaurants that have a tip line on their receipts? Is this an auto-thing on a credit card machine? Or do they really expect me to pay to walk my own food to my table?

I haven't been out to eat in a while because I'm broke in grad school right now, but if my wife and I do go out, we tip right. The fact that we don't have much money is never an excuse for us. It's just part of the deal when going to a sit down restaurant. We've been doing a lot of brown bag lunches and cooking at home to save money lately though.

Oh absolutely. I've never not tipped at a sit-down restaurant, and like I said, I usually round way up. I was asking more about quasi-fastfood places where on your credit card receipt there's a line for tip but where you receive literally no service at all aside from the food.

I usually don't tip unless it's a sit down type of restaurant. Most people go to quasi-fast food places so they don't have to tip.

I think it's an auto thing on the cridit card machine, but I'm not sure.
How about the styrofoam cup with the "usually misspelled" TIPS written in sharpie on it, at the fast food mexican taco restuarants

Yeah I've never tipped there but I've always wondered if I'm being an ass by doing so.

I disagree. Lousy service gets 10%.

To preface, I don't care what people tip. As a bartender/server with more years than i'd like in the restaurant business, i've learned people are going to tip what they are going to tip, and fucking deal with it. My area in particular is particularly unpredictable. I'll give the same (great) service to two different tables, and get a 5-10% tip from one, and the occasional insane 50-100% tip from another. Being at an upscale restaurant, when it works out... it's nice, and I take the good with the bad.
I will say, If you go to a nicer restaurant, and you plan on going back, it's worth it to leave a memorable tip. The waitstaff will remember you, and your experience will be better off for it in many ways.
My only gripe lately has been with big to-go orders. This has always been an issue, but has only recently been getting on my nerves. If I get a takeout order for $50-100, it's paid in plastic, and I don't get a tip on that, i'm still getting taxed on a percentage of that bill. It's a tough situation, because I don't necessarily think I should get tipped for boxing up, and bagging some food... but in reality, I'm paying money out of my pocket to take your to-go order.

It is automatic to include a tip line on the receipt. I've had many arguments with some stingy friends over tipping. The worst part of going out with a group of people is their attempts to break down the check and tip. It's almost nauseating to see people whip out cell phones for calculator use. I'm also in the 20-25% range on average. However, it is possible to have horrible service which will drop the percentage.

shit, 15 years ago 15% was what you gave for GREAT service. This is a sign of the problems with the tipping system- the percentage keeps growing and growing. ive given good service as much as 40%. and bad service as little as zero.
I also dont tip for services i didnt ask for, want, or need. If i go to a baseball stadium, i can find my own fucking seat. No, homeless man, i am not paying $7.00 because my kid took a toothpick with an american flag sticker. calling me "big man" is not going to change my mind. Pizza Place? Im not sure turning around, grabbing the box off the shelf and turning and handing it to me warrants 20%. and there is more to good service than just refilling my Coke. And NEVER blame the kitchen for your fuck up. If its obviously been sitting under a damned heat lamp for too long, the odds are you messed up- not the cook.
However, sit down places i default to 20%. Pizza Drivers are 20% + rounding up the change. Minimum of $3.00 though. Also, I never ordered lunch when i worked in an office, but id hear the women talking about how they dont tip because thats what the delivery charge covered, so if i happened to be in the elevator with the guy on the way up, id usually give him a couple bucks and tell him that they probably wouldnt tip- not to cover for them, but because i felt bad for the guy.
delivering pizzas for a while in college and out i have seen it all. rich people tend to not tip to well, and the working class tip better. i have delivered to 1 million dollar homes and was luck to get a dollar. i have delivered to $40K dollar homes and gotten a $5
we also delivered to a business park and the main company there requested i never deliver anymore. i went ballistic as we told them countless times and faxed them, that it was there job to get their money together before we got there and it was to be paid as one bill.
the problem is they would order personal pan pizzas, and at times, i would have to deliver 10-20 at t atime. figure the average price was $3.17 for each. since it was lunch and deliveries were just starting, they would take their time to pay me. i mean literally 10-15 minutes (causing a backup of the deliveries at the store) and then would all try to pay seperately, and wanting exact change.
we started off with $20. 2 fives, 8 ones and the rest in change. needless to say i never had the right change for them, and i shouldnt have had to since they were told it had to be paid at once.
finally one day i fucking snapped and started screaming to the point that 4 managers surrounded me and asked me what was wrong. i called these kids (19-22 year olds) who worked at a fucking callcenter what they were, fucking assholes.
of course they asked for my name and i gladly gave it to them and by the time i got back to the store my manager was laughing on the phone about it, yet apologizing and all that shit.
