I don't know that I've ever ordered bun. Banh mi is a different recipe. A sandwich recipe, in fact.

Right. With an actual "bun" or sandwich bread.

I have a few vietnamese pals that have tutored me in ordering vietnamese cuisine, so I'm going to take some ordering risks at a local place where they seem pretty receptive to 'whiteys' ordering clumsily.

How do you know a reputable charlie joint from an unreputable charlie joint? What are the signs to look for?

Price, mostly. Vietnamese food isn't made with expensive ingredients, so when you're paying upwards of $8 for a sandwich that's basically pork, vegetables, and french bread, you know the business isn't really interested in honesty or authenticity.

$8.00 for a sandwich at any food joint is ridiculous anyhow. In fact, Panera is really starting to push it, ya know?
