Post subject:  2009 Australasian Tour Highlights - Gems & Rhinestones

Inspired by the work of Lowlight79 and co, I have reviewed the awesome 2009 Australasian tour and put together a two-disc compilation that captures some of the highlights of this leg of the Backspacer Tour. I got my inspiration for the artwork from diogombb who made some for a previous 2009 highlights disc I put together.

The band had really hit their stride by the time they made it downunder, producing some masterful performances of the new songs, as well as pulling out many rare gems and deep cuts. This collection focuses primarily on these rarities and Backspacer tracks, but also contains standout renditions of some of the staples, ensuring that each album was represented.

I have also included some of the more memorable 'Eddie banter' between songs, and tried to make song transitions and set flow as seamless as possible.

Unfortunately as these bootlegs are still being sold by TenClub, I won't be able to post any links to download this lossless collection on any public forum for the time being.

Very cool! The artwork is great and the set looks awesome!

What program do you use to make the transitions/cross-fades between the tracks?

Woa! Can't wait for that. I really enjoy the odd compilation disc. And with the artwork, I'd definitely be making myself a nice physical cd.

Cheers!

I used Nero 9 Wave Editor. I know there's probably a better program out there but this one seems to do the trick :nice:

I'm assuming you have only altered the transitions to blend the tracks. Is the audio otherwise unaltered? I'm guessing some level adjustment might be all that is necessary.

Correct, audio is otherwise unaltered. After some hit and miss with the US 09 boots, the Australasian ones were consistently superb (as much as they can be without Brett Eliason behind the desk  ). Hence no need to adjust levels etc.

Sounds great. By levels I meant volume matching, I didn't think you had done any EQ as this can only make things worse.

Ridley, this is your first seamless compilation right? I have been meaning to make one for a while. Care to share any tips for the transitions?

My main tip would be to cut and paste the crowd noise from the end of previous track, to the beginning of the track you are wanting to transition into - that way you have more to work with when cross fading it with the previous track in your compilation (you can also shorten the crowd noise later). Occasionally some minor volume adjustment of the crowd noise will also be required to make the cross-fade sound more realistic.

When actually doing the cross-fading/volume adjusting I find it much easier to cut and paste the beginning of the next track in the compilation, to the end of the current track I'm working with - that way all the adjustments can be made and tested within the one file. I simply cut and paste the beginning of the next track back into its own file before saving.

Which brings me to another tip - save a separate copy of each file after each adjustment you make so you can always go back if you screw something up. The whole process is pretty much a case of trial and error, so be prepared to go through a fair few CD-Rs before you get it just right!

Hope that all makes some kind of sense - good luck! :)
