BitLocker?
I've also read that Ultimate is the only one that you can upgrade to. I'd have to have a fresh install for the free version of pro that I have access to. I don't have anything important to back up, but dag namb it, I don't want to spend 5 hours re-installing everything.

Apparently BitLocker is hard drive encryption software.

I heard installing this thing can be a bitch for those (like myself) who border on computer illiterate. And I'm in the market for a new laptop (probably HP). They're offering a free upgrade to Windows 7 from Vista when it's officially commercially released. To that end, should I wait to buy the computer so Windows 7 is already installed, or can I buy it now but go through the hastles of having to install Windows 7 when it becomes available?

It really shouldn't be that hard to install.
However, unless you absolutely have to I'd wait till black friday or after to pick anything up. This quarter is going to be a perfect storm of new tech and hardware. i7/i5 are becoming more proliferate, new GPU architectures, better SSD price/gb ratio (though still largely out of the mainstream).

After messing around with this over the past two weeks I can say that this is the best thing Microsoft has had in quite a while. I really like the new taskbar and preview functions. Very big improvement, especially while multitasking.

so I just finished installing this. Anything about Windows 7 I need to know? What's so great about this? Like I said, I just installed it but it doesn't appear to be all that different than Vista, but I haven't messed around with it too much.

The taskbar is the main attraction, but there are little improvements that you'll notice over time.

My Vista works quite good. I just set up to look like Win 98.
