I just got a dvd burner that came with Nero. I installed the drive and attempted a few burns without success. I am working on some different things to get everything to work, but one question I have is when I go to do a direct DVD-DVD copy, I am told that my blank doesn't have enough free space? My source is the same exact brand/size as my blank....

I suggest you first copy the DVD into your HD and then burn a DVD Video with the VIDEO_TS file.

I use DVD Shrink, but I don't think its free :?

I will try it when I get home. I tried dvd dycrypter and I copied the dvd to my HD, but when I went to write it, i got a buffer error at the very end of the burn. It may have to do with my overall computer speed, maybe I need to go from 256 up to 512, who knows????

You will need a decent CPU (mine is AMD K-6 II 1.3GHz, not too good), a decent amount of memory (I've got 384MB) and, very important, a quite big amount of free space in your HD (the perfect free space is a little more than you are burning, so 5GB free will be OK). I accomplish all these three requirements and never had any problem burning any DVD. I only had a problem with the first, but that was because I tried to burn a data DVD with DVD-Video files, so it got fucked up.

Good luck!

Does this effect the quality of the DVD at all? I have several shows sitting on my HD that are too big to burn to a 4.7GB disc. I was going to try going the dual-layer route, but maybe dvdshrink is a better option. Any suggestions?

You don't generally see the changes on the video when converting (files not larger than 5/6 gbs.

However I never tried to burn dual-layer DVDs on a single DVD... But reducing the file size by two must be at least a bit noticeable.

Most store-bought DVDs are double layered, giving 8 gig instead of 4. However the blank double-layered DVDs cost around 10 bucks, as opposed to 1 buck for the regular blanks.

Finally got everything working right. I used DVD shrink with my Nero software and everything copied perfectly.

Kind of unrelated, but interesting. All of sudden about a month ago my DVD drive stopped playing DVD's. I reinstalled software, checked drivers, all that. Finally uninstalled SP2 and everything went back to perfect.
