My combo drive on my Macintosh 867mhz Powerbook Titanium has crapped out. I would like to replace it with somethat that can read and write DVD + and - R and RW to CD. It would be nice to cover all the bases. I found out the hard way (when some PJ shows burned to DVD +R arrived) that this laptop only deals with DVD -R.

I found this for a replacement drive:
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/item/750 ... DVDSDB8DL/

I think it does what I want, but I'm not completely sure. Will it read/write to both + and - R DVDs and does it seem like a good price?

Sorry to be so uninformed. I've never burned a DVD before and until a couple of months ago had never even heard of + and - R formats.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

thanks

That looks like what you want. I'm a little surpised that it says it burns dual layer discs, because as far as I know, Apple hasn't included dual layer burning drives in its computers yet.
But that drive would defininitely cover all the bases as far as burning goes. You might be able to find an external USB or Firewire burner at a lower price, but that would make your burning capabilities less portable. I think that's a good price for an internal replacement laptop drive.

Hey thanks a lot for looking at this for me. I have no idea what a dual layer disk is.

I have one remaining question. As I mentioned, the laptop I have has a CD read/write drive with DVD read only capability, what Apple calls a combo drive.

Which of the following two drives do you think are the right replacement drive?

http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20 ... CTDVDSDA4/

http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20 ... BG4SD8XDL/

Can I get away with the one that costs $169.95 or do I have to buy the one for $239.99?

Dual-layer dvds hold about twice as much data as regular dvds. Dual layer burners are dropping in price, but blank dual layer discs are still on the expensive side.
It looks to me like you should get the cheaper drive. It says the more expensive drive is for the titanium powerbooks without cd writing capabilities. You say you have a ti p-book that can write cds and read dvds, so I'm pretty sure the $170 drive is for you. You might want to call or email them with the model number of your computer just to double check which drive is the right one.
I would also look over the installation instructions given at the bottom of the page and make sure your comfortable with the installation procedure if you plan on doing it yourself. It doesn't look too hard, but upgrading laptops is a little trickier than upgrading desktops.

Thanks a lot Knight Rider, I appreciate the help. The wording on the two ads for the different drives was a little tricky. I came to the same conclusion about the $170 drive.

I think I'll be okay with installing it. I recently replaced the hard drive in this laptop and while I was in there (since I was suspecting the dvd/cd drive was about to crap) I check out the dvd/cd drive and it looked like replacing it would be the same kind of a deal.

If you see me offering B&Ps any time soon, you know it worked out okay :)

Well, putting the new CD/DVD burner in was not anywhere near as easy as swaping the hard drive. I started working on this Friday night and was cookin' along pretty well when I hit a part that needed a Torx #6 screwdriver. Of course, the only one we have is a #8. I spent about 45 minutes trying other small flat head screwdrivers because I really didn't want to put the whole thing back together. I got 3 of the 4 offending screws out but the one last one wouldn't budge without that damn Torx #6 screwdriver. I had to put it all back together and wait until the next day when I could go to the hardware store.

Lots of cables and ribbons and connectors and screws later....
The computer is reassembled and the burner works!

Glad to hear that everything is working. It never fails... any DIY job will always require the one tool that you don't have.
