Well I downloaded a driver from canon, but it doesn't appear to have done anything.

and choose 'Download drivers' (in the Set Up section)

Well, it turned out that I had to restart the compiuter for the driver to work, then I had to find a program to scan it into, but long story short, I have scannage!
