I'm trying to burn those hdtv avi's to vcd (with nero), it works but the picture looks pretty blurry compared to a vcd made from mpg's. am i doing something wrong or am i lacking a certain divix? Are they supposed to be burned as svcd's? I have no clue, maybe some of you guys can help.

Convert the avi to mpg with TMPGEnc. It is always better doing the converting yourself, and not letting Nero handle things.

Check http://www.dvdrhelp.com for more info on avi -> mpg conversion.

The difference is that VCD -is- MPEG. so when you download a video that's mpeg, vcd quality, it will be exactly the same on CD as it was on your computer.

AVI is a different file format, and in this case, it's using DivX compression. So when you burn it with nero, nero has to convert that to MPEG. Nero isn't the best program to do this, but it will work.

It would look better if you used a different program to convert AVI to MPEG (like tmpgenc), or converted it to SVCD. But all of those are still converting from one format to another. If you want the best quality, there's a PAL DVD torrent over at easytree, or you can wait for the VFC bootleg DVDs to start circulating. a proper dvd version of masters of war will be filler on one of those.

Is the general consensus that TMPEGenc is the best way to go, as far as converting avi/divx to dvd?

I'm about to burn the first season of Lost to DVD and don't want to take the time to convert all 24 episodes if I'm not going to get good results.
