I'm a philosopher not a mathematician, so I have a stupid question: which is faster, 3.0 Mbps or 256 Kbps?

Are you sure you don't mean KBps? Lower case b is bits, upper case is bytes.. 8 bits in a byte.

3 Mbps = 3000 Kbps = 375 KBps (I think)

What I read was Kbps...but I think you're right about the bits and Bytes.
